Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Master WingBy 3:30 a.m., the ground floor of the Romano estate had been transformed into an interrogation room.

The sprawling marble foyer, usually echoing only with the sound of ticking grandfather clocks and distant wind, was now filled with the low, murmuring tension of twenty heavily armed syndicate enforcers. They stood in rigid formations around the perimeter, their tailored suits concealing shoulder holsters and combat knives.
Upstairs, in the heavily fortified master suite, the atmosphere was entirely different. It was a cavernous room dominated by a massive mahogany king-sized bed, floor-to-ceiling bulletproof windows overlooking the mist-shrouded Lake Michigan, and a private security monitor station built into the mahogany wall.
Fiona sat on the edge of a velvet armchair, gently rocking Leo. The infant was sleeping peacefully now, completely oblivious to the war zone unfolding around him. Fiona wore an oversized silk bathrobe Alessio had forced her to take, her own clothes ruined by sweat and tears.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Alessio walked in. He had changed into a fresh black shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the intricate, dark tattoos winding up his forearms. He held two cups of black coffee, extending one toward her.
"Drink it," he commanded, not unkindly. "You’re shaking."
Fiona took the cup, her fingers brushing against his. His skin was ice-cold, contrasting sharply with the burning intensity in his eyes. "I don't need coffee, Mr. Romano. I need to know if your son is safe in this fortress."
"For now, yes. The entire estate is locked down on biometric override," Alessio said, pacing across the Persian rug like a caged panther. He stopped by the window, staring out into the dark expanse of the rose gardens. "Dominic has rounded up the staff. Cook, maids, security detail, gardeners. Seventeen people. One of them is a traitor."
"Or an outsider who paid off someone inside," Fiona countered softly, taking a sip of the bitter coffee. Her nursing mind was sharp, analytical, cutting through the emotional fog. "The pacifier clip was a gift. Who gave it to you?"
Alessio froze. His back remained to her, his broad shoulders tensing under the dark fabric of his shirt. "My sister. Elena."
Fiona’s eyes widened slightly. "Your own family?"
"In my world, blood isn't thicker than water. It's the primary target," Alessio said, turning around slowly. His face was a mask of ancient grief and cold calculation. "Elena’s husband runs the rival Outfit out of Cicero. When my wife died, Elena wept at the funeral while her husband smiled behind a wreath of lilies. They want the Romano empire. And without an heir, the syndicate council will force me to step down and hand the logistics routes to them."
Fiona stared at him, the horrifying scale of the conspiracy dawning on her. She had thought she was escaping a corrupt detective and a ruined career, but she had accidentally walked straight into the eye of a Chicago mob war.
"You brought me here because you needed a nanny," Fiona said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Did you also run a background check on me that went deeper than my fake references?"
Alessio held her gaze, unblinking. "I know everything about you, Fiona Bennett. I know you graduated top of your class at Johns Hopkins. I know you worked the trauma ward at Chicago General for five years. And I know a corrupt detective named Marcus Vance framed you for stealing fentanyl to cover his own tracks."
Fiona’s cup slipped from her fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor, dark coffee splashing across her bare feet. She scrambled out of the chair, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "How... how do you know that?"
Alessio didn't flinch. He closed the distance between them in two swift strides, his hand shooting out to gently, yet firmly, grab her wrist. His grip was unbreakable, but his touch was shockingly tender.
"In Chicago, nothing stays buried, Fiona," Alessio murmured, his face inches from hers. "You thought you were hiding from the world in my estate. But I chose you precisely because you had everything to lose—and because you were the only person in this city competent enough to save my son when everyone else around me was busy plotting his murder."
Before Fiona could process the revelation, the secure comms panel on the wall buzzed violently.
Dominic’s voice crackled through the speaker, laced with absolute fury. "Boss. You need to come down to the security basement. We checked the master key logs. The door to the nursery wasn't bypassed from the outside."

Alessio’s eyes never left Fiona’s. "Go on."
"It was accessed using the biometric thumbprint override from the primary family terminal," Dominic said, pausing for dramatic, devastating effect. "And the only two people in this entire estate with master admin clearance are you... and your sister, Elena."
