Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty"Alessio!"

Fiona’s scream pierced the chaotic noise of the docks, cutting through the wind and the fading sounds of gunfire.

As Alessio collapsed to one knee, Fiona was already moving. Her trauma nurse instincts—honed over years of split-second emergency room triage—overrode the terror gripping her chest. She drew her Glock, fired two precise shots into the rogue enforcer hiding behind the drums, and dropped his lifeless body to the concrete.

Then she was kneeling beside Alessio in the dirt, her hands flying to his chest.

"Alessio—look at me! Don't close your eyes!" Fiona's voice was sharp, commanding, absolute authority taking over her panic. She tore open his jacket and ripped the fabric of his shirt away.

The bullet had entered through his right shoulder, grazing the edge of his pectoral muscle and exiting cleanly through the shoulder blade. It was a clean wound, missing major arteries, but the blood loss was significant, and shock was setting in rapidly.

Alessio winced, a cold sweat beading on his forehead. He grabbed Fiona’s wrist with surprising strength, his dark eyes locking onto hers through the fog.

"Is... is Leo safe?" Alessio rasped, his voice strained.

Fiona felt a hot tear slip down her cheek, but her hands remained rock-solid as she pressed a sterile trauma bandage directly against the wound. "Leo is back at the estate with Dominic, completely safe, you idiot! Why did you do that?!"

Alessio let out a weak, cynical chuckle, coughing slightly as blood stained his lips. "Because... nobody touches my family. And you... are my family, Fiona."

Behind them, Dominic stepped out of the shadows, kicking Marco’s submachine gun away and hauling the screaming rival boss up by his collar.

"Boss," Dominic said, eyeing Alessio’s wound with a grim, lethal expression. "The perimeter is secure. Marco's men have surrendered or fled. What do we do with this rat?"

Alessio didn't even look back at Marco. He kept his dark eyes fixed on Fiona as she applied pressure to his shoulder, stopping the hemorrhage with expert precision.

"Tie him to the cargo crane," Alessio whispered, his breath shallow. "Let the morning tide remind the Outfit what happens when they cross a Romano."

Two hours later, the private medical suite on the third floor of the Lake Forest estate looked more like a trauma ICU.

Fiona had personally stitched the wound closed, her hands steady as she applied the final bandages. Alessio lay shirtless against the crisp white sheets of his bed, his muscular chest scarred with old knife wounds and now a fresh bullet graze.

Fiona stood by the bedside tray, washing her hands in a basin of antiseptic water, her heart still hammering against her ribs.

Alessio propped himself up on his good elbow, watching her every move. "You saved my life tonight, Fiona. Just like you saved my son."

Fiona dried her hands with a towel and turned around, her brown eyes flashing with a mixture of anger and deep, overwhelming emotion.

"You took a bullet for me, Alessio!" she snapped, crossing her arms over her chest. "You're the head of a multi-million-dollar syndicate! If you die, the entire Chicago underworld goes up in flames, and your son is left with nobody!"

Alessio smiled—a genuine, tired, completely disarming smile. He reached out with his uninjured arm, extending his hand toward her.

"Then it's a good thing," Alessio murmured softly, "that I didn't die. Because I still have a question to ask you."

Fiona hesitated. She walked slowly toward the bed, looking down at his outstretched hand. "What question?"

Alessio closed the distance, wrapping his warm fingers around her hand and pulling her gently down until she was sitting on the edge of the mattress.

"Will you stay here, Fiona?" Alessio asked, his voice dropping into a quiet, intense whisper that filled the silent room. "Not as a nurse. Not as a nanny. As my wife, and the mother to my son. Let me spend the rest of my life protecting you the way you protected us."

Fiona stared into his dark, searching eyes. She thought about her past—the corrupt detective, the ruined career, the cold, lonely road that had led her to this sprawling fortress in Lake Forest. She realized she had stopped running months ago. She had finally found home.

She leaned down, pressing her forehead gently against his, her breath mingling with his.

"Yes," Fiona whispered against his lips. "Yes, Alessio."
