Chapter 4 - The Chicago General GhostThree days had passed since the night in the nursery. The tension inside the Lake Forest estate had transformed from frantic paranoia into an icy, calculated siege mentality. Dominic and his enforcers patrolled the perimeter like silent statues, and every delivery, every visitor, and every digital signal passing through the mansion was scrubbed twice by private cybersecurity experts.

In the master suite, Fiona stood by the marble double sinks, washing baby bottles while Leo napped peacefully in his crib nearby. Her phone—a burner she had purchased with cash the day she arrived in Chicago—sat on the marble counter, buzzing silently with a notification.
She picked it up. It was an encrypted text message from an unknown number.
“I know where you are, Fiona. Chicago General hasn't forgotten you. Marcus wants his files back, and he knows you’re hiding in the Romano fortress. Tick-tock.”
Fiona’s blood turned to ice. She dropped the bottle brush, her hands gripping the edge of the sink as her breath hitched. Marcus Vance. The corrupt narcotics detective who had framed her, ruined her medical license, and threatened to kill her if she ever opened her mouth about the stolen hospital fentanyl ring. He had found her.
She turned around, her eyes wide with panic, only to find Alessio standing in the doorway of the bathroom. He leaned against the doorframe, his arms crossed over his chest, his dark eyes observing her every micro-expression.
"Who is messaging you?" Alessio asked, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, but his posture radiating predatory alertness.
Fiona swallowed hard, trying to steady her voice. "Nobody. Just... an old debt collector from Seattle."
Alessio pushed off the doorframe in a blur of motion. Before she could react, he crossed the room, snatched the burner phone from the marble counter, and glanced at the screen. His eyes scanned the message in a fraction of a second. The temperature in the room plummeted.
"A debt collector from Seattle who happens to text you from a local Chicago cell tower using an encrypted proxy," Alessio said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, glacial register. "Marcus Vance. The detective who framed you."
"Mr. Romano—give me the phone," Fiona said, stepping forward, her professional composure fracturing. "This is my problem. It has nothing to do with you or Leo. I’ll leave the estate today. I won't let my past endanger your son."
Alessio grabbed her by the shoulders, stopping her dead in her tracks. His grip was firm, inescapable, but his eyes burned with an intense, possessive fury.
"Leave? To go where, Fiona? Right into a shallow grave in the Cook County forest preserves?" Alessio’s voice rose, vibrating with suppressed rage. "Nobody leaves this estate. And nobody hunts down my son’s savior on my watch."
"You don't understand!" Fiona cried, tears of frustration spilling over her eyelashes. "Marcus has connections inside the Chicago Police Department! He has access to federal database warrants! If he comes here with a corrupt badge, he won't just arrest me—he’ll use me to get to you!"
Alessio let out a dark, cynical laugh. He pulled her closer, his face inches from hers. "Let him come. CPD has been on the Romano payroll for two decades. Marcus Vance is a low-level parasite playing in an ocean populated by sharks."
He pulled out his own encrypted satellite phone, dialed a three-digit speed dial, and pressed it to his ear.

"Dominic," Alessio commanded into the phone, his eyes never leaving Fiona's. "Run a trace on incoming ping to Fiona’s burner phone originating from the Lincoln Park district. Find Marcus Vance. Drag him out of his precinct, throw him in the trunk of a black Tahoe, and bring him to my basement. I have a score to settle."
Fiona stared at him, her heart pounding against her ribs. The lines between right and wrong, law and crime, blurred completely away. She wasn't just a nurse hiding from her past anymore. She was standing beside the apex predator of Chicago, and the war was about to come to their doorstep.
