Chapter 7 - Blood on the DocksThe Chicago docks at midnight looked like the mouth of hell.

Heavy industrial fog rolled in off Lake Michigan, swallowing the towering shipping cranes and casting long, skeletal shadows across the concrete piers. The air was thick with the acrid stench of burning diesel, sulfur, and fresh cordite.

A convoy of five black armored SUVs idled with their high beams cutting blinding paths through the fog. Surrounding them were dozens of armed enforcers from the Cicero Outfit, led by Marco—Elena’s ruthless, power-hungry husband.

Marco stood atop a shipping container crate, a tactical submachine gun resting casually in his arms, a cruel grin splitting his scarred face. Below him, tied to a wooden cargo pallet, sat three of Alessio’s senior logistics managers, bloodied and beaten.

"Are you ready to hand over the keys to the southern shipping lanes yet, Alessio?!" Marco roared into the foggy night, his voice echoing across the water. "Your empire is crumbling, Romano! First your wife, then your sister, and now your precious docks!"

From the shadows of the pier, a single engine roared to life.

A matte-black Lamborghini Urus sliced through the fog, its headlights blazing like the eyes of a charging beast. It slammed to a halt twenty yards from the convoy.

The driver's side door swung open, and Alessio Romano stepped out.

He didn't wear a tactical vest. He wore his tailored black suit, his tie neatly knotted, his face carved entirely from granite. He held a custom Sig Sauer P226 in his right hand, the barrel pointed casually at the ground.

Behind him, the passenger door clicked open. Fiona stepped out into the freezing night air. She wore a dark tactical jacket over her silk dress, her hair tied back in a tight ponytail, a suppressed Glock 19 tucked securely into her waistband.

Marco burst into laughter, pointing his submachine gun at them. "What is this? Did you bring your nanny to a gunfight, Alessio? Are you planning to change my diapers after I blow your head off?!"

Alessio didn't flinch. He walked forward slowly, stepping over pools of dark hydraulic fluid. "Marco. You broke the truce. You targeted an infant. And you stepped onto my docks without an invitation."

"The Romano era is over, Alessio!" Marco shouted, raising his weapon. "Kill them all!"

Before Marco's enforcers could even raise their rifles, the fog around the piers erupted into fire.

From the rooftops of the shipping containers, Dominic and twenty of Alessio’s elite snipers opened up with suppressing fire. The Cicero enforcers dropped like bowling pins, their weapons clattering against the concrete.

Marco swore loudly, diving behind a steel cargo container for cover. He popped up, firing blindly in Alessio's direction.

Bullets whined off the metal chassis of the Lamborghini. Alessio didn't panic. He raised his Sig Sauer with practiced, surgical precision, squeezed the trigger three times, and clipped Marco’s shoulder, spinning the rival boss around and dropping him to his knees.

Marco screamed, clutching his bleeding shoulder as he slumped against a wooden pallet.

Alessio walked up slowly, standing over him, the barrel of his gun resting lightly against Marco’s forehead.

"You wanted my empire, Marco," Alessio said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You can have a six-foot plot of it in the Cicero cemetery."

Just as Alessio’s finger tightened on the trigger, a sharp sound cut through the chaos.

Click.

From behind a stack of steel drums to the left, a figure emerged from the fog. It was a rogue Cicero enforcer holding a compact pistol, aiming directly—not at Alessio—but straight at Fiona, who was covering the flank ten yards away.

Fiona didn't hear him in time.

Alessio saw it happen in slow motion. The distance was too great to shoot the enforcer before he pulled the trigger.

Without a single second of hesitation, Alessio dropped his gun, spun around, and threw his own body directly into the line of fire, shielding Fiona with his broad chest.

Bang.

The gunshot echoed across the piers like thunder.

Alessio staggered backward, his breath catching in his throat as a dark crimson stain rapidly bloomed across the white shirt beneath his jacket.
