Chapter 3 - The Confession in the VaultThe security basement of the Romano estate was carved deep into the limestone bedrock beneath Lake Michigan, designed to withstand a direct missile strike. It smelled of ozone, gun oil, and old blood.

Alessio strode down the concrete corridor with Fiona walking closely behind him, Leo safely strapped into a tactical carrier against her chest. Dominic stood waiting by a reinforced steel door, flanked by four armed enforcers. Inside, bound to a heavy metal chair with industrial zip-ties, sat a terrified, weeping woman in a silk evening gown.
Elena Romano.
Her blonde hair was disheveled, her diamond earrings catching the harsh fluorescent light as she shook her head frantically. "Alessio! You’re insane! You can't tie me up like a common criminal! Your guards dragged me out of my guest suite in my pajamas!"
Alessio didn't say a word. He walked into the room, his shadow swallowing the small space. He grabbed a steel folding chair, dragged it across the concrete with a screeching metal sound, and sat down directly in front of her. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, staring at his twin sister with dead, unblinking eyes.
"You accessed the nursery terminal at 1:55 a.m., Elena," Alessio said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You disabled the hallway camera loop for four minutes. And you planted a modified, pressure-sensitive fragmentation bead into my son's pacifier clip."
"No! It wasn't me!" Elena sobbed, her mascara running down her cheeks in black streaks. "It was Marco! My husband! He forced me! He said if I didn't give him the security override codes, he would leak photos of my offshore accounts to the federal prosecutor! Alessio, please, I'm your sister!"
Fiona stood in the doorway, watching the exchange with her clinical detachment warring against deep revulsion. She had seen drug addicts lie to save their supply, and she had seen sociopathic criminals lie to avoid a life sentence, but watching a sister betray her own nephew for syndicate politics was a new tier of human degradation.
"Marco is a coward who hides behind skirt tails," Alessio said quietly. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a sleek, heavy combat knife, sliding it slowly out of its leather sheath. The steel gleamed under the fluorescent lights. "Marco wouldn't have the stomach to engineer a suffocation. That was your touch, Elena. Clean, surgical, designed to look like a tragic SIDS incident so you could inherit the Lake Forest estate after my grief-driven suicide."
Elena stopped crying. The terror in her eyes abruptly vanished, replaced by a cold, venomous hatred that mirrored her brother's. She threw her head back and let out a harsh, bitter laugh.
"You always were arrogant, Alessio!" she spat, straining against the zip-ties. "Ever since our father died and handed the crown to you, treating me like a piece of furniture to be traded off to the Outfit! Do you know what it’s like to watch you play king while my husband and I scrape by on your scraps? That boy of yours is a weakness! He made you soft! And I wanted to fix our family's bloodline!"
Alessio stood up slowly. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell. He simply looked at Dominic.
"Take her to the Chicago River warehouse," Alessio commanded. "Lock her in the cold storage unit until Marco answers my call. If he doesn't surrender his northern docks by noon tomorrow, feed her to the carp."
"Alessio—no! You wouldn't!" Elena screamed as Dominic and two enforcers hoisted the chair up, dragging her kicking and screaming out of the basement.
As the heavy steel door slammed shut, the basement fell into a suffocating silence. Fiona stood frozen in the doorway, clutching baby Leo. The raw, ruthless brutality of the Romano empire was no longer an abstract concept; it was unfolding right before her eyes.
Alessio turned around, walking slowly toward her. His face was carved from granite, but as his eyes landed on the sleeping infant against her chest, the hard edges softened just a fraction.
"Are you afraid of me now, Fiona?" he asked, his voice low, almost vulnerable.
Fiona looked up, meeting his intense, dark gaze without flinching. She thought about her own ruined life—how a corrupt cop had destroyed her nursing career, how she had run across state lines with nothing in her pockets. She realized she wasn't looking at a monster. She was looking at a man trapped in a cage of blood, doing whatever it took to keep his son alive in a world that wanted him dead.
"I’m not afraid of monsters, Mr. Romano," Fiona said softly, adjusting the strap across her shoulder. "I worked in the trauma ward at Chicago General. I’ve seen worse things than a mafia boss protecting his family. I’m just wondering... when does this war end?"

Alessio stepped closer, the scent of cedar and gunpowder washing over her. He reached out, his warm knuckle gently brushing against a stray lock of brown hair that had fallen across her forehead.
"It ends," Alessio whispered, "when every single person who touched my son is rotting in the ground. And until then... you stay by my side."
