Chapter 16 - The Siege of Turin

While the Genoa trap snapped shut, the counter-strike across Turin unfolded with terrifying synchronization.

Within forty-five minutes, every major holding of the Barone syndicate had fallen. The underground casinos were raided by men in black suits who didn't fire a single shot, using absolute tactical dominance to clear the floors and secure the ledgers. The financial offices were sealed by forensic accountants working under armed guard, freezing every offshore account and shell corporation Barone owned.

Don Salvatore Barone was sitting in his private study in Turin, pouring himself a celebratory glass of scotch, waiting for the confirmation call from Genoa.

Instead, his study doors didn't just open—they were blown inward by a synchronized breaching charge.

Smoke billowed across the expensive imported carpets. Before Barone could draw the gold-plated pistol from his desk drawer, a heavy Italian leather boot slammed down onto his hand, pinning his fingers against the wood with bone-crushing force.

Barone shrieked in agony, looking up through tear-filled eyes.

Standing over him was Matteo Santoro.

The mafia boss looked down at his rival with the cold, detached gaze of an executioner. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't breathe heavily. He simply reached down, grabbed Barone by the silk collar of his shirt, and hoisted him upright as if he weighed nothing at all.

"You..." Barone wheezed, blood dripping from his nose. "You’re ruined... Genoa is burning..."

Matteo pulled a small tablet from his inner pocket and tapped the screen, holding it up to Barone’s face. The screen displayed a live camera feed of the Genoa port: pristine, undamaged containers sitting quietly under the emergency strobes, alongside six captured Barone mercenaries kneeling in handcuffs.

Barone’s face turned the color of ash. His knees buckled.

"You thought you could wage a war on my doorstep," Matteo whispered, his voice like ice sliding over winter glass. "You thought because my heart had stopped beating for a time, my hands had forgotten how to crush an insect."

"Please..." Barone choked out, trembling violently. "Name your price. Money, territory, anything—"

"You cannot pay for what you disturbed," Matteo interrupted, handing Barone over to Giovanni and two capos who stood waiting in the shadows. "Take him to the basement of the Langhe estate. We have a very long conversation ahead of us."
