Chapter 19 - The New Foundation

Three months later, the underworld of northern Italy had stabilized under an absolute, unquestioned peace. The Barone family had been legally dissolved, its assets absorbed into legitimate agricultural and shipping cooperatives managed by the Santoro syndicate, effectively cleaning up decades of criminal liability.
In the grand study of the Langhe estate, Matteo Santoro sat at his massive oak desk. But the ledgers before him were different now. Alongside shipping routes and port logistics, there were architectural blueprints for a charitable foundation dedicated to child healthcare and education across Turin and Genoa—named, quietly and permanently, The Aurora Fund.
A soft knock interrupted his work.
"Come in," Matteo said.
The door opened, and Elena stepped inside, holding a small plate of warm, freshly baked biscotti. Behind her peeked Luna, clutching her woolen rabbit, her red sneakers tapping against the marble floor.
"Signor Santoro," Elena said respectfully, setting the plate on the corner of his desk. "The kitchen staff prepared these for your afternoon coffee."
Matteo looked up, a faint, genuine trace of a smile touching the corners of his mouth—the smile Luna had noticed was missing months ago.
"Thank you, Elena," Matteo said, his voice smooth and steady. He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a small, beautifully bound children’s storybook with a ribbon bookmark. He slid it across the mahogany surface toward Luna.
Luna’s eyes lit up. She scurried across the room, hopped up onto the heavy leather armchair opposite Matteo’s desk, and picked up the book.
"Is this for me?" she asked.
"It is," Matteo said, leaning back in his chair, his gray eyes softening completely. "It's about a little bear who learns to paint the stars. If you read it, perhaps you can tell me how the story ends tomorrow."

Luna opened the cover eagerly, beginning to sound out the words with her childish, melodic voice.
Elena stood by the door, watching the formidable mafia boss—the man feared as Il Marmo—listen with rapt, gentle attention as a little girl read a fairy tale in his forbidden study.
