Chapter 9 - What He Saw

The fog in the vineyards was thick, swallowing the moonlight and turning the long rows of grapevines into a labyrinth of twisting shadows.

Matteo moved like an apex predator, his senses razor-sharp, his Beretta raised. Fifty yards into the vineyard, near an old stone well, he heard a muffled whimper.

He crept forward, pressing his back against the rough bark of a massive oak tree.

A man in a black tactical balaclava stood by the well, holding a small, squirming bundle wrapped in a pink blanket. Luna. The little girl was crying softly, her tiny hands clutching the fabric of her pajamas.

"Keep her quiet," a second voice hissed from the shadows, stepping forward with a suppressed submachine gun. "The boss wants her alive as leverage. Let's move to the vehicle."

Matteo didn't give them a second to move.

"Drop her," Matteo’s voice cut through the fog, cold, quiet, and absolutely lethal.

The two operatives spun around, raising their weapons. But Matteo was already moving. Two sharp, muffled cracks echoed through the vineyard. The operative holding the gun dropped instantly, collapsing into the wet mud between the vines.

The second man froze, pressing the barrel of his knife against Luna’s small throat. "Stay back, Santoro! One step and the kid's throat opens!"

Luna let out a terrified scream—a high, piercing wail that shattered the cold night air.

At that exact sound, something inside Matteo snapped. The memory of Aurora’s laughter turning to silence flashed behind his eyes like lightning. The universe was not going to take another little girl from him. Not this one. Not while he had breath in his lungs.

Matteo didn't negotiate. He didn't blink.

With preternatural speed, he raised his Beretta and fired through the dense fog. The bullet struck the kidnapper square in the shoulder. The man shrieked, dropping his knife as he spun backward into the dirt.

Matteo rushed forward, kicking the weapon away, and instantly scooped Luna up into his arms.
