Chapter 5 - The First Breach

Three days later, the routine of the Santoro estate had subtly shifted. Elena and Luna were now housed in the north wing, directly beneath Matteo's private study.

That evening, Matteo sat at his massive oak desk, staring at reports from the Genoa docks. But the words on the page blurred. For the first time in three years, his focus was broken. From the courtyard below his open window, a faint sound drifted up—a child's laughter, bright and uninhibited, bouncing off the stone walls.

Matteo stood up, walked to the window, and pulled back the heavy silk curtain.

Down in the gravel courtyard, Elena was hanging laundry on a line while Luna chased a stray golden retriever puppy that belonged to one of the estate guards. The little girl was shrieking with joy, her small red sneakers kicking up dust as she stumbled and fell onto the grass, laughing even harder.

Matteo watched them. He didn't turn away. He stood in the shadows of his study, motionless, tracking every movement of the child.

Two hours later, after night had fallen and the estate had settled into its usual heavy stillness, Matteo left his study. He didn't take the main stairs. Instead, he walked down the dimly lit corridor of the north wing, stopping outside the door of Elena’s suite.

He didn't knock. He pressed his ear against the heavy oak.

Inside, Elena's soft voice was reading a story. Then, Luna's sleepy voice piped up: "Mommy, is the angry man outside the window a king?"

Elena hushed her instantly. "Hush, Luna. We don't talk about Signor Santoro like that."

"He looks like a sad king," Luna murmured, her voice growing heavy with sleep. "He needs a hug."

Matteo pulled back from the door as if he had been burned. He stood in the dark hallway, his hand resting against the cold stone wall, his chest tightening with a foreign, terrifying ache. He walked back to his study, but for the first time, he didn't sleep on the leather sofa. He sat at his desk, staring into the dark courtyard until the first pale light of dawn crept over the Langhe hills.
