Chapter 2 - The Second TriggerThe sharp, metallic click echoed through the nursery like a gunshot.

For a terrifying second, I thought it was a detonator. My body reacted on pure instinct; I threw myself sideways, shielding Nico’s crib with my own body, waiting for the blast, the shattered glass, the fire.
Nothing exploded.
Instead, a low, electronic hum vibrated through the baseboards of the mansion.
Downstairs, somewhere deep within the reinforced concrete foundation of the Bolaro estate, a heavy security gate slammed shut with a definitive, mechanical thud. Then another. And another.
Sector lockdown.
Lorenzo’s face twisted in fury. He lunged forward, grabbing Elena by the collar of her blouse and lifting her off her feet with effortless, brutal strength. Her heels kicked uselessly against the marble.
“What did you just activate?” Lorenzo growled, his face inches from hers, veins bulging at his temples. “Who else is in this house?”
Elena choked out a laugh, blood vessels bursting around her eyes from the lack of oxygen. “Not… not who is in the house, Lorenzo… what is leaving it.”
She clawed weakly at his wrist, her eyes wild with a manic triumph. “The data files. The financial transfers. The offshore accounts holding every single penny of the Bolaro empire. They aren't stored in a cloud server downtown. They were right here, synced to the nursery’s local secure network. And the moment the lockdown protocol triggered… the transfer went live.”
Lorenzo froze. For the first time since I walked into this house, I saw genuine panic flicker behind the cold eyes of Chicago’s most feared crime boss.
He dropped Elena to the floor. She collapsed in a heap, coughing violently, gasping for air, a sickening grin spread across her bruised face.
“Dr. Crane,” Lorenzo spun around, his voice cracking with urgency. “Get the main terminal in my study open. Override the lockdown protocol right now.”
Crane stumbled backward, his hands shaking so violently he dropped his medical tablet. “I—I can’t! That’s an enterprise-grade encryption grid! It’s tied to the biometric safety switches of the estate’s primary vault system! If we force a hard reset without the master sequence—”
“Then find the damn sequence!” Lorenzo roared, drawing his own weapon and pressing the cold barrel directly against the center of Dr. Crane’s forehead.
The color drained entirely from Crane’s face. He fell to his knees on the floor, weeping openly, his fingers flying across the shattered glass and spilled formula as he tried to grab his fallen tablet.

I stood over Nico’s crib. The baby was still whimpering softly, his tiny chest rising and falling. Safe for tonight—for this minute. But the air in the room had shifted. We weren't just fighting a mysterious illness anymore.
We were sitting inside a trap, and the clock was ticking down to something much worse than midnight.
