Chapter 6 - The Shadow in the BricksThe beam of light snapped directly toward my archway, cutting through the darkness like a laser.

“Hey!” a voice shouted from down the tunnel. “Did you hear that?”

Heavy, rapid boots splashed through the shallow puddles, charging straight toward my hiding spot. There was nowhere left to run—the tunnel behind me was a dead end, and the ladder leading back up to the house was too far away.

I slipped my hand into my pocket, my fingers wrapping around the only weapon I had: the heavy, stainless steel medical shears I used for cutting bandages.

One.

The beam of light danced across the wet bricks just feet away from my face.

Two.

A tall figure stepped around the curve of the tunnel, a suppressed submachine gun raised and ready, his eyes scanning the shadows.

“I know someone’s down here,” the mercenary muttered, taking another step forward, his boots squelching in the mud. “Come out with your hands up, and maybe the boss lets you live—”

He never finished the sentence.

From the darkness directly behind him, a massive, silent shadow dropped from the iron pipes running along the ceiling like a striking panther.

A heavy arm wrapped around the mercenary’s throat in a brutal, crushing chokehold. There was a sickening crack of vertebrae, and the man went limp before he even hit the ground, his gun clattering uselessly against the concrete.

Lorenzo Bolaro stepped out from the shadows, wiping a streak of blood from his cheek. His suit was torn at the shoulder, and a deep graze stained his white dress shirt crimson, but his eyes were burning with cold, absolute fury.

“You’re slow, nurse,” Lorenzo whispered, his voice dangerously calm as he glanced down at the unconscious man, then up at me. “And you carry too much noise in your coat.”

I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for an hour. “Nice to see you too. How’d you get down here?”

“A boss always has a private way out of his own house,” Lorenzo said, bending down to snatch the dead mercenary’s submachine gun and spare magazines. He checked the chamber with practiced efficiency. “Did they hurt him?”

I opened my coat slightly. Nico was still asleep, breathing softly, completely oblivious to the war zone around him.

“He’s sleeping,” I whispered. “But we aren't safe yet. Elena’s brother has the entire digital perimeter locked down, and his men are swarming the estate.”

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened. He looked down the dark tunnel leading toward the lake.

“Marcus Vance isn’t just running a tech firm,” Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a low growl. “Six months ago, he was a high-level software architect for federal intelligence before he got blacklisted for industrial espionage. He didn't just hack my security system tonight to steal my money.”

He looked up at me, his dark eyes deadly serious.

“He hacked it to take my son.”
