Chapter 2 - The House of Secrets

The police lights flashed against the gothic architecture of the mansion, casting long, eerie shadows across the hallway. Within minutes, two officers and a cyber-forensics technician swept into the house. Rebeca was cuffed, screaming obscenities and hurling venomous curses at Daniel, Mateo, and Sofia as she was dragged down the grand staircase.
"You'll never win! The house is legally mine under the secondary clause! You'll rot here with your dead wife's bastards!" she shrieked, her voice echoing until the heavy oak front door slammed shut, cutting off her rant.
Silence settled over the mansion once more, but it was a heavy, exhausted silence.
Daniel dismissed the remaining officers after giving a preliminary statement, promising to hand over the complete digital forensics report by morning. He walked slowly back to the children's room, his legs feeling like lead. The adrenaline was fading, leaving behind a hollow ache in his chest.
Mateo and Sofia were sitting on the edge of the bed. Sofia had finally stopped crying, though she still clutched the hem of Mateo’s shirt as if it were a life raft. Mateo looked exhausted, his young shoulders carrying a weight no child should ever have to bear.
Daniel walked in, dropped to his knees right in front of them, and pulled them both into a tight, fierce embrace.
"I'm so sorry," Daniel whispered, his voice thick with tears. "I'm so, so sorry I let her in here. I'm sorry I ever doubted for even a second."
"You didn't doubt us, Dad," Mateo said softly, burying his face in Daniel's shoulder. "You figured it out."
"Because of you, buddy," Daniel pulled back, cupping Mateo's face in his hands. "You saved us. Both of us."
Later that night, after both children had finally fallen into a deep, dreamless sleep, Daniel retreated to his study. The room smelled of old leather, paper, and the faint, lingering scent of Elena’s favorite lavender perfume—a scent he hadn't dared to touch since the accident.
He sat down at his mahogany desk and powered up his desktop computer. He needed to verify the extent of Rebeca's intrusion. She hadn't just faked a few text messages; she had been living in this house for six months as a supposed family friend, slowly weaving a web of legal and psychological manipulation to claim the estate upon his presumed mental incapacity.
As Daniel typed in his master password, a hidden partition on the hard drive flagged an alert. It wasn't a system error. It was an automated backup trigger set by Elena herself, years before she died.
File Name: IF_ANYTHING_HAPPENS.enc
Daniel’s breath hitched. He stared at the encrypted file icon pulsing softly on his screen. Elena had built a digital vault, and the key wasn't a password—it was a biometric signature coupled with a specific sequence only he and she knew.

With trembling fingers, Daniel placed his thumb on the USB fingerprint scanner.
The screen flashed green. A folder popped open, revealing dozens of documents, financial ledgers, and a video file dated precisely three days before Elena's fatal car crash.
