Chapter 5 - The Confession Room

The fluorescent lights of the local precinct holding facility hummed with an irritating, high-pitched frequency. Rebeca sat at the metal interrogation table, her hands cuffed to the bolted loop. She looked smug, her hair slightly disheveled, but her posture reeked of arrogant confidence.

When the heavy steel door swung open and Daniel walked in, she didn't even flinch. She just smiled that same cold, repulsive smile.

"Did you miss me already, Daniel?" Rebeca purred, leaning back in her chair. "You look terrible. You really thought you had me, didn't you? But guess what? Without a signed confession or a functioning video file that holds up in a chain-of-custody challenge, my lawyer will have me out of here by sunrise. And when I get out..."

She leaned forward, her eyes narrowing into slits. "...I'm taking full custody of Sofia and Mateo under the emergency guardianship clause. And you? You'll be locked up in a psych ward for erratic behavior."

Daniel didn't yell. He didn't smash his fists on the table. Instead, he pulled out the metal chair opposite her, sat down slowly, and placed a single manila folder on the table. He opened it, sliding a signed, notarized digital affidavit across the stainless steel surface.

Rebeca glanced down at it, and for the first time, her smirk faltered.

It was Marcus's full, recorded confession, stamped with a federal magistrate's preliminary warrant, complete with audio transcripts of her cutting the brake lines of Elena’s SUV, detailed down to the exact timestamp and tool used.

"Marcus... that little coward," Rebeca whispered, her face turning pale.

"He sang like a bird, Rebeca," Daniel said softly, leaning in close across the table so she could see the absolute, frozen fury in his eyes. "And guess what else? Viktor’s team just seized every single offshore account, fake alias, and forged deed you’ve accumulated over the last ten years. You aren't just looking at murder charges. You're looking at federal racketeering and financial treason."

Rebeca lunged forward, rattling her chains in a blind, feral rage. "You can't do this to me! I made you! I gave you a way out of your miserable grieving life! You owe me!"

"I owe you nothing," Daniel whispered, standing up slowly and buttoning his jacket. "Except for a front-row seat to the rest of your miserable life behind bars."

He turned and walked toward the door, leaving her screaming obscenities into the empty walls of the interrogation room. But just as his hand touched the door handle, Rebeca stopped screaming. She let out a low, chilling chuckle.

"You think you've won, Daniel? You think Elena was an angel?" Rebeca hissed, her voice dripping with venom. "Ask yourself why she kept that encrypted file hidden from you in the first place. She knew something about you, Daniel. Something you've tried very hard to forget."

Daniel froze with his hand on the latch. A cold shiver ran down his spine.

"What are you talking about?" Daniel demanded, turning back around.

Rebeca smiled wider, blood dripping from the metaphorical knife she had just twisted. "Ask yourself why Sofia looks nothing like you, and why Elena met me in secret three weeks before she died. She was running away from you, Daniel. I just accelerated the timeline."
