Chapter 4 - The Intruder in the Dark

Daniel froze, his muscles tensing like coiled steel. The heavy oak door slowly creaked open, bathing the threshold in a sliver of eerie hallway light.
A silhouette stood in the doorway. It was smaller than Rebeca, wearing a dark hoodie, moving with eerie, silent precision.
"Who's there?" Daniel demanded, his voice low and dangerous as he slid out of his chair, keeping his body low to the ground.
The figure didn't answer. Instead, a metallic glint caught the moonlight. A knife.
Without hesitation, Daniel lunged forward across the dark room, tackling the intruder into the heavy bookshelves. Books rained down in a thunderous avalanche as Daniel pinned the attacker to the floor, wrapping his hands around their wrist and forcing the blade down toward the rug.
"Talk! Who sent you? Was it Rebeca's associates?" Daniel barked, pressing his knee into the intruder's chest.
The hoodie slipped back, revealing a shock of blonde hair and a panicked, sobbing face. It wasn't a professional hitman. It was Marcus, Rebeca’s twenty-year-old nephew, whom she had occasionally brought over to do odd jobs around the estate.
"I-I didn't want to do it! She made me!" Marcus cried out, thrashing weakly beneath Daniel's weight. "She called me from the holding cell using a smuggled burner phone! She said if I didn't break in and delete the encrypted drive, she'd pin the whole murder on me!"
Daniel’s grip didn't loosen. "What murder, Marcus? Spell it out."
"Elena's murder!" Marcus sobbed, tears streaming down his face. "Aunt Rebeca cut the brake lines on her SUV! I saw her do it in the garage! She promised me a hundred thousand dollars from the estate payout if I kept my mouth shut and helped her frame you and the kids!"
The confession hung in the air, heavy and undeniable. Daniel’s vision went red. He hauled Marcus up by the collar of his hoodie, dragging him straight out of the study and down the dark corridor toward the children's room, making sure Mateo and Sofia were still locked safely inside.
He didn't call the police this time. He dialed a private number—his old associate from his corporate security days, a man named Viktor who specialized in fixing situations the law couldn't touch quickly enough.
"Viktor," Daniel said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "I need a specialized extraction and a federal magistrate woken up right now. We have a confession to a homicide, and I want an airtight cage built around every single asset Rebeca and her accomplices own."

"Consider it done, boss," Viktor replied on the other end. "Where are you?"
"I'm going to visit Rebeca in holding," Daniel said coldly. "It's time for a little family chat."
