Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of TreasonThe silence in the CrossTech laboratory was absolute, save for the rhythmic, ominous ticking of the Prometheus Engine’s cooling core. Ten-year-old Lily Bennett didn’t flinch as she kept her small finger pressed precisely against the micro-welded titanium bypass valve.

Dr. Marcus Vale stepped forward, his loafers clicking sharply against the reinforced steel floor. His face had drained of all color, the self-assured smirk he usually wore when dismissing junior researchers entirely replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated panic.

"Move your hand, child," Vale commanded, his voice tight, stripped of its usual academic arrogance. "You have no idea what kind of system you are interfering with."

"I know exactly what it is," Lily replied, her voice steady in a way that felt entirely unnatural for a child. "It's a localized thermal feedback loop. And it's not a design flaw. It's a signature."

Ethan Cross pushed past his lead scientist, towering over the little girl. The billionaire's eyes, usually calculating and cold, were wide with disbelief and a sudden, sharp suspicion. "Explain yourself, young lady. Right now."

Lily pulled her hand back and wiped a smudge of machine grease from her thumb onto her oversized jeans. "My dad was an aerospace machinist before he got sick," she said, her voice dropping slightly as she looked toward her mother, Maria, who was still clutching her mop handle as if it were a lifeline. "He taught me how to read thermal stress fractures before I could read chapter books. This bypass valve isn't overheating because the cooling liquid is too thick. It's being deliberately throttled by a manual override sequence programmed into the local firmware."

Marcus Vale lunged forward, his hand darting toward the control console to wipe the diagnostic logs.

"Stop him!" Lily shouted.

Before Vale’s fingers could hit the purge key, Ethan Cross’s massive hand shot out, grabbing the lead scientist by the collar of his custom-tailored designer shirt and slamming him back against the steel console with enough force to rattle the multi-million-dollar monitors.

"Try to wipe the logs again, Marcus," Ethan whispered, his voice dangerously low, "and I’ll throw you out of this window. We're on the forty-second floor."

Ethan turned back to Lily, the mockery entirely gone from his expression. "Show me."
