Chapter 6 - The AftermathThe crimson emergency lights clicked off, replaced once more by the sterile, brilliant white of the CrossTech laboratory. The heavy hydraulic blast doors groaned and slowly slid back open, revealing the empty, darkened corridors of the forty-second floor beyond.

Dr. Marcus Vale slumped forward in the chair, unconscious from the sheer terror and physical trauma of the ordeal, drooling onto his expensive silk tie.

Ethan Cross let out a long, shuddering breath that seemed to release ten years of accumulated stress from his broad shoulders. He walked over to the metal tray, looked down at the tiny micro-token, and then turned his gaze toward Lily, who was quietly wiping her hands on a clean paper towel.

"Well," Ethan said, his voice remarkably soft compared to the thunderous roar he had projected just minutes earlier. "I believe I owe you an apology, young lady. And a promise."

He walked over to Maria Bennett, who was still trembling slightly, her knuckles finally relaxing their death grip on her mop handle.

"Maria," Ethan said, looking the night janitor straight in the eye. "For two years, you've cleaned my floors, stayed late without complaint, and kept this building running while people like Marcus Vale tried to tear it apart from the inside out."

Maria looked down at the floor, suddenly feeling self-conscious about her faded jeans and worn-out sneakers. "Mr. Cross, I... I was just doing my job. Please don't fire me. I need this work."

Ethan let out a sudden, booming laugh—the first genuine, warm laugh Lily had ever heard from him.

"Fire you?" Ethan shook his head, a wide smile spreading across his face. "Maria, you aren't a janitor anymore. Unless you want to be. But starting tomorrow, you are the Head of Facility Operations for the entire CrossTech global enterprise, with a corner office on the fiftieth floor and a salary that comes with enough zeros to make your head spin."

Maria’s jaw dropped. She looked at Ethan, then at Lily, and then back again, her eyes welling up with thick, sudden tears. "I... I don't know what to say. Are you serious?"

"Dead serious," Ethan said, turning his gaze back to Lily. "And as for you, Lily Bennett..."

The billionaire walked over until he was standing right in front of the ten-year-old girl, who was still clutching her stuffed bear under one arm. He knelt down so they were eye-to-eye.

"You saved my company, you exposed a traitor, and you proved that genius doesn't care about corner offices or expensive degrees," Ethan said softly. "The one hundred million dollars I promised your mother? That still stands. But I'm also setting up a full, unconditional educational trust fund that will cover every single schooling, medical, and scientific endeavor you ever want to pursue, for the rest of your life."

Lily looked down at her stuffed bear, then up at her mother, who was crying tears of pure, unadulterated relief for the first time in as long as Lily could remember.
