Chapter 4 - THE HIDDEN LEDGER

Three days after the fall of the Whitlock empire, the Carver mansion felt eerily quiet. The frantic energy of the engagement preparations was gone, replaced by a heavy, protective stillness.

Hannah sat in the sunroom overlooking the manicured gardens, sipping chamomile tea. The jagged section of hair near her left temple still bothered her when she caught it in the mirror, but Martin had discreetly brought her a skilled stylist from Boston who had artfully blended the cut into a chic, modern bob.

She held her brother Caleb’s original accounting notebook in her lap. Daniel had handed it to her the previous evening, along with a heavy iron key.

"The safe in the study contains everything Caleb was working on," Daniel had told her. "And everything Aaron discovered before they silenced him. Read it. You deserve to know the truth."

The pages were filled with meticulous columns of numbers, cross-referenced bank routing codes, and secret offshore accounts tied directly to the cartel that had been using Whitlock Shipping as a transit hub. But tucked inside the back cover was a folded, handwritten letter addressed to Hannah, written in Caleb’s frantic, rushed handwriting just two days before he vanished.

Hannah, If you’re reading this, I didn't make it out. Whitlock isn't running this alone. There’s a silent partner—someone higher up in the city’s political machine who approved the dock permits. They’re planning to liquidate the entire northern harbor to build a multi-billion-dollar transit terminal, but they needed to clear out the independent mechanics and union leaders who wouldn't look the other way. Aaron found out because they used his loading bay for the drug shipments without his knowledge. He threatened to go to federal authorities. They murdered him to send a message. If you need protection, go to Daniel Carver. He doesn't know about the corruption inside his own shipping trust yet, but he’s the only man in Providence powerful enough to take them down.

A tear slipped down Hannah’s cheek as she folded the letter. She now understood why Daniel had kept her close, why he had protected her from the very beginning. He hadn't just rescued her on a whim; he had been searching for the truth about the rot eating away at his own empire.

The French doors of the sunroom slid open, and Daniel stepped inside. He had changed out of his suit into a dark turtleneck, looking every bit the ruthless syndicate leader, yet his expression softened instantly when he saw her.

"You shouldn't be reading that," he said gently, walking over and pulling a chair up beside her. "It’s old ghosts."

"They aren't ghosts yet, Daniel," Hannah said, looking up at him with steady eyes. "The silent partner my brother mentioned... the one who approved the terminal project and protected the Whitlocks. Who are they?"

Daniel was silent for a long moment. He looked out at the rain clouds gathering over the bay.

"Judge Robert Sterling," Daniel said coldly. "The uncle of the doctor who checked on you. He controls the federal district court judges in this county. And he thinks he’s untouchable."

Hannah’s breath hitched. "He was at the engagement party. He was drinking champagne while Claire humiliated me."

"He was celebrating what he thought was the final consolidation of his power," Daniel corrected, reaching out to cover her small hand with his large one. "He thought marrying Claire to me would give him direct control over the Carver ports. Instead, he just handed me every piece of evidence I needed to destroy him."

"What’s our next move?" Hannah asked, her voice carrying a steely resolve that surprised even her.

Daniel looked down at her hand resting in his, then up to her eyes. A slow, dangerous smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"We invite him to dinner," Daniel said.
