Chapter 7 - THE UNSEEN THREAT

Three years passed in the sprawling, heavily guarded fortress of the Carver estate.

Little Aaron was now a chaotic, bright-eyed toddler who terrorized the estate staff by riding his red tricycle through the marble hallways and demanding that Martin bake him extra chocolate chip cookies. Hannah had fully stepped into her role not just as Daniel’s partner, but as the formidable matriarch of the Carver shipping empire, managing the philanthropic foundations and community outreach programs that quietly kept the Providence waterfront loyal to the family name.

It was a crisp autumn evening. The grand ballroom, once the site of Claire Whitlock’s cruel humiliation, was now filled with the gentle laughter of a family dinner party. Ben Carver—now a strapping eleven-year-old attending elite private schools—was showing little Aaron how to build a Lego tower on the Persian rug.

Daniel stood by the window of his private study on the second floor, a glass of scotch in his hand, watching the gated entrance through the security monitors.

There was a sudden, sharp rap on his study door.

Martin walked in without waiting for permission, holding a secure encrypted tablet. His face, usually a mask of calm professionalism, looked unusually grim.

"Sir," Martin said quietly, closing the heavy mahogany door behind him. "We just intercepted a digital transmission routed through a secure proxy server in Zurich."

Daniel didn't turn around immediately. "Whose account?"

"A Swiss holding company," Martin replied, stepping closer to the desk. "They just bought up eighty percent of the remaining municipal dock leases that Judge Sterling used to control. And Daniel... the holding company is registered under a shell corporation named Whitlock & Sterling Holdings."

Daniel turned slowly, his slate-grey eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "I thought Claire was in a private sanitarium in Europe, and her father was serving a life sentence at Attica."

"Claire is still locked away," Martin said grimly. "But someone else is running the corporation. Someone with deep pockets, institutional backing, and a personal vendetta against the Carvers."

Martin tapped the tablet screen, bringing up a high-resolution photograph intercepted from a private airport terminal in Boston earlier that afternoon.

A tall, impeccably dressed woman with platinum-blonde hair and dark sunglasses stepped down from a private Gulfstream jet, flanked by four armed private security guards. She looked up directly at the airport security camera, offering a cold, knowing smirk as if she knew they were watching.

Hannah walked into the study just in time to see the image on the screen. She froze, her breath catching in her throat.

"Do you know her?" Daniel asked, his voice dropping into a lethal register.

Hannah gripped the edge of the mahogany desk, her knuckles turning white.

"That’s Victoria Whitlock," Hannah whispered, the blood draining from her face. "Claire’s older sister. Everyone thought she died in a yacht explosion in the Mediterranean ten years ago."

Daniel stared at the screen, watching the platinum-blonde woman vanish into the back of a black armored limousine.

"She didn't die," Daniel said quietly, his jaw tightening as the storm gathered behind his eyes. "She was just waiting for the right moment to come home."
