Chapter 5 - THE INVITATION

The formal dining room of the Carver mansion had played host to governors, cartel bosses, and foreign dignitaries over the decades, but tonight’s dinner party had only one guest of honor: Federal Judge Robert Sterling.

At sixty-two, Sterling was the picture of judicial respectability, with impeccably silvered hair, a tailored Italian wool suit, and an air of untouchable arrogance. He sat at the far end of the mahogany dining table, swirling a glass of 1982 vintage Bordeaux, completely unaware of the trap closing around him.

"Daniel, my boy," Sterling boomed, offering a warm, patrician smile. "I was terribly sorry to hear about the unfortunate misunderstanding with Claire. Such a volatile young woman. But business must go on, eh? Now that the Whitlock merger has... well, dissolved under somewhat dramatic circumstances, we need to discuss the municipal port expansion permits. The city council is ready to vote."

Daniel sat at the head of the table, cutting into a rare steak with deliberate, unhurried precision. He didn't answer immediately. The silence stretched until it became deeply uncomfortable.

Sterling shifted in his seat, his smile faltering slightly as he noticed the empty chair to Daniel's left—a place set with fine crystal and silver. "Expecting someone else?"

"Someone you know very well, Judge," Daniel said quietly.

The heavy mahogany double doors of the dining room swung open.

Hannah walked in.

She wore a breathtaking emerald-green silk dress that hugged the subtle curve of her seven-month pregnancy, her dark hair styled into that chic, modern bob that completely hid the jagged cut from a week ago. Her posture was immaculate, her gaze fixed entirely on the federal judge.

Robert Sterling froze. His wineglass stopped halfway to his mouth, the deep red liquid sloshing over the rim.

"H-Hannah?" Sterling stammered, blinking in utter disbelief as he looked from the domestic maid he had seen cleaning the baseboards a week ago to the stunning woman walking with the authority of a queen. "What is the meaning of this? Why is the domestic staff in the formal dining room?"

"She isn't staff, Robert," Daniel said, standing up and pulling out the chair to his left for Hannah. She seated herself with quiet grace, resting her hands on her belly. "She is the mother of my child. And the rightful owner of the Monroe estate."

Sterling’s face turned the color of curdled milk. He gripped the arms of his chair, looking frantically toward the closed dining room doors, where he suddenly realized the armed guards standing watch were not Carver’s usual domestic staff, but federal marshals in plainclothes.

"I don't know what kind of game you're playing, Daniel," Sterling said, his voice trembling slightly despite his best efforts to maintain judicial authority. "I am a federal judge. I have immunity."

"Immunity doesn't cover murder, Judge Sterling," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.

Special Agent Marcus Vance of the FBI walked into the room, holding a thick federal indictment dossier and a pair of polished steel handcuffs.

Sterling shot out of his chair, knocking his wineglass over. It shattered against the hardwood floor, dark red wine spreading like blood across the rug. "You can't do this! I signed the warrants! I control the district courts!"

"Not anymore," Daniel said, walking slowly around the table until he stood directly behind Hannah’s chair, resting one hand protectively on the back of it. "Your nephew Dr. Sterling already signed a full confession this afternoon in exchange for witness protection. He told us how you used your judicial authority to sign off on the falsified autopsy reports for Aaron Brooks and Caleb Monroe."

Sterling stared at them, his eyes darting wildly. "They were just nobodies! Dock workers! They stood in the way of a billion-dollar port development!"

"They were human beings," Hannah said for the first time, her voice cutting through the room like shattered glass. "And they were my family. You took them away because you were greedy."

Agent Vance stepped forward, grabbing Sterling by the shoulder and spinning him around. The metallic click of handcuffs echoed loudly through the grand dining room.

May you like

"Robert Sterling, you are under arrest for federal corruption, conspiracy to commit murder, and racketeering," Vance recited coldly, pushing the former judge toward the exit.

As the heavy doors closed behind them, silence descended upon the dining room once again.
