Chapter 8 - THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT

The rain began to fall over Providence once again, beating a relentless tattoo against the reinforced glass of the Carver mansion.

Downstairs, the laughter of little Aaron and Ben echoed faintly through the grand hallway, a reminder of everything Daniel and Hannah had fought so hard to protect. But upstairs in the study, the air was thick with impending war.

Daniel placed his glass down on the desk, pulled his heavy charcoal coat from the back of his chair, and slid his hand into the holster beneath his arm, checking the weight of his Sig Sauer P226.

Hannah watched him with steady, unblinking eyes. She walked over to the hidden panel behind the law books, popped open the wall safe where Caleb’s original ledger still rested, and pulled out a heavy steel-lock box containing all the operational deeds and shipping contracts of the new empire they had built together.

"She’s coming for the ports," Hannah said, her voice entirely devoid of fear.

"She’s coming for everything," Daniel corrected, walking over and placing his hands firmly on Hannah’s shoulders, looking down into her dark, resolute eyes. "She thinks she can walk into my city and take what we built on blood and survival."

"Let her try," Hannah replied, a fierce, unbreakable smile touching her lips. "She has no idea who she’s dealing with."

Downstairs, the heavy iron security gates at the end of the estate's long, winding driveway buzzed loudly.

Daniel kissed Hannah’s forehead once, swiftly and deeply, before turning toward the door.

"Lock the study from the inside," Daniel commanded quietly. "If I don't come back in an hour... burn the ledgers."

Hannah watched him walk out into the hallway, the heavy oak doors closing behind him with a soft, final click. She didn't lock the door. Instead, she walked over to the mahogany desk, sat down in Daniel’s high-backed leather chair, opened Caleb’s ledger to the very first page, and picked up a heavy fountain pen.

The war for Providence had only just begun, and the queen was finally ready to make her move.
