Chapter 5 - The Velvet TrapWeeks passed, transforming the grim, silent mansion into a place of strange, unsettling warmth. Dominic began eating breakfast in the main dining hall. He requested reports from every branch of the empire, dismantled three separate internal corruption rings within days, and—most disturbingly to Alessandro—began leaving small porcelain toys and plush animals on the kitchen counter for Lily.

Alessandro knew he had to act before Dominic fully cemented his revival.

The occasion presented itself during a high-stakes dinner party hosted at the mansion. The guests included city councilmen, rival syndicate liaisons, and high-ranking capos. It was meant to showcase Dominic’s triumphant return to society.

Alessandro stood at the head of the long mahogany table, raising his glass in a toast.

"To my cousin, Dominic," Alessandro smiled, his eyes gleaming with hidden malice under the chandelier light. "Who has risen from the ashes like the great beast of the savannah. They say a miracle brought you back to us, Dom. Some bedtime story whispered by a servant's child."

A collective murmur rippled through the room. Mentioning a housekeeper's toddler in front of powerful crime lords was a calculated insult designed to make Dominic look soft, compromised by domestic sentimentality.

Dominic slowly set down his silver fork. The entire dining hall went dead silent, the air dropping twenty degrees.

"A wise child often sees what blind men miss, Alessandro," Dominic replied softly, his eyes locking onto his cousin with predatory stillness. "Some men hunt for power because they want an empire. Others want an empire because they are too cowardly to face their own empty hearts."

Alessandro’s smile faltered. Before he could retort, the heavy dining room doors swung open.
