Chapter 16 - Echoes Across the Pacific

Back in Colorado, the winter of 2026 was one of the coldest on record.

Inside the maximum-security wing of the federal correctional facility near Florence, Eleanor Vance sat in a stark, windowless visiting booth, wearing an orange jumpsuit that clashed violently with her remaining dignity. Her skin had taken on the gray, papery texture of someone who had lost her grip on absolute power.

Across the stainless-steel table sat a court-appointed public defender who was handling her final, futile appeals.

"There are no further motions to file, Mrs. Vance," the young lawyer said, closing his briefcase with a sharp snap. "The appellate court upheld the original sentence. Asset forfeiture is final. The federal government has seized all remaining personal holdings, including the family estate in Cherry Hills."

Eleanor stared at the metal table, her lips trembling. The Cherry Hills estate. The grand mansion where she had ruled Denver high society for forty years, where she had hosted governors and billionaires, where she had coldly and methodically orchestrated the lives of everyone around her.

Gone. Sold at a public federal auction to pay off a fraction of the corporate restitution fund.

"And Carter?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "Has he... has he filed anything?"

"Mr. Vance is serving his sentence in a medium-security facility two hours north," the lawyer replied indifferently. "He hasn't spoken to legal counsel in weeks. He spends most of his time in the prison library."

Eleanor closed her eyes, a bitter, hollow ache settling deep into her chest. She had spent her entire life obsessed with legacy—with ensuring the Vance name remained etched into the marble of corporate America forever. And in her quest for absolute control, she had engineered her own family's total annihilation, handing the keys of her empire to a woman she had underestimated until it was far too late.

"She won," Eleanor whispered into the empty air of the booth.

"Excuse me?" the lawyer asked, pausing at the door.

"Nothing," Eleanor muttered, staring down at her handcuffed hands. "Just... an expensive mistake."
