Chapter 4 - The Bride in White

The sanctuary of Grace Cathedral in downtown Denver smelled of white lilies, expensive French perfume, and suppressed hypocrisy.

The pews were packed with corporate titans, politicians, and socialites wearing designer gowns and tailored suits, all of them whispering behind gloved hands about the lightning-fast divorce and the high-society pregnancy that necessitated such an expedited ceremony.

At the altar, Carter Vance stood in a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo, his jaw tight, his eyes fixed rigidly on the stained-glass windows ahead. He looked exhausted. Dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes—the physical manifestation of weeks spent agonizing over missing files, fading corporate stocks, and a quiet, nagging intuition that something was terribly, fundamentally wrong.

Eleanor sat in the front row on the groom's side, wearing a rigid silk suit of midnight blue, radiating triumphant pride. To her, this wedding wasn't just a ceremony; it was the ultimate coronation of the Vance dynasty.

The heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral swung open.

The organ swelled into the traditional wedding march.

Veronica Hale appeared at the threshold, draped in forty thousand dollars of imported Chantilly lace and silk tulle, her seven-month belly curving prominently beneath the tailored bodice. She walked down the aisle with a slow, deliberate grace, a triumphant smirk playing across her painted lips as heads turned to watch her pass.

Carter watched her approach, but instead of the warm rush of paternal pride or marital affection he expected to feel, a cold, heavy stone settled in the pit of his stomach.

He thought of the day I left. He thought of the way I hadn't cried. He thought of the divorce papers signed with terrifying, clinical speed.

Why didn't she fight me? the thought echoed relentlessly in his mind. Sarah loved this house. She loved our life.

Veronica reached the altar, stepping up beside him. Her hand slid into his rigid palm. Her skin felt clammy.

"Do you, Carter Vance, take this woman to be your lawful wedded wife..." the minister began, his voice echoing off the vaulted stone ceilings.

Carter opened his mouth to speak.

Before the word I could pass his lips, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the cathedral banged open again with a loud, resounding crack that silenced the organist mid-chord.
