Chapter 5 - The Interruption

Every head in the cathedral whipped around toward the entrance.

It wasn't a disgruntled ex-lover or an armed protestor. It was a courier in a high-visibility courier uniform, panting slightly, holding a heavy, secure black lockbox stamped with international priority seals.

"Delivery," the courier called out, his voice cutting clearly through the cavernous silence of the church. "Express legal consignment for Carter Vance. Personal signature required immediately."

A murmur rippled through the pews.

Eleanor stood up halfway from the front row, her face flushing with furious indignation. "This is a private wedding ceremony! Remove this man at once! Ushers!"

Two burly security guards stepped forward, grabbing the courier by the shoulders. "Pal, you're out of line. Get out of here before we call the—"

"Wait," Carter commanded, his voice sharp and ragged.

He pulled his hand out of Veronica’s grip, stepping down from the altar platform. The strange, cold dread in his chest had expanded into a full-scale panic. Something in his gut screamed that this box wasn't junk mail.

"Give it here," Carter said, walking down the steps toward the center aisle.

The courier shook off the security guards, pulled a digital tablet from his belt, and handed Carter a stylus. "Sign here, Mr. Vance. Priority international courier service out of Sydney, Australia. Paid in full with zero restrictions."

Sydney.

The name hit Carter like a physical blow.

He signed his name with a shaking hand on the digital pad. The courier thrust the heavy black lockbox into his arms, turned on his heel, and strode briskly back out the double doors, leaving the entire congregation staring in stunned silence.

Carter stood in the middle of the aisle, holding the heavy metal box.

"Carter, what on earth is this?" Eleanor hissed, hurrying down from the front row, her pearls clicking against her collarbone. "Throw it away! The ceremony is waiting! Minister, please proceed—"

"Shut up, Mother," Carter snapped, his voice dropping into a harsh, commanding growl that made Eleanor freeze in absolute shock. He had never spoken to her that way in his entire life.

Veronica stepped down from the altar, her face pale beneath her bridal veil. "Carter, don't open that. It’s a stunt. Someone is trying to ruin our day."

Carter didn't answer. He set the lockbox down on a polished mahogany pew, pulled a small emergency key ring from his pocket, and found the matching titanium key that had been taped securely to the underside of the parcel with a handwritten note.

The note was written in ink he would recognize anywhere.
