Chapter 6 - Inside the Box

Carter’s hands trembled as he slipped the titanium key into the lock.

Click.

The heavy lid sprung open with a clean, pneumatic hiss. Inside, resting on a bed of black velvet, were four thick manila folders sealed with red wax stamps, accompanied by a sleek USB flash drive and a handwritten letter addressed directly to him.

The entire cathedral held its collective breath. You could have heard a pin drop on the stone floor.

Carter lifted the top letter, unfolding the heavy stationery.

Dear Carter, he read silently, his eyes scanning the crisp black ink. By now, you’re standing at an altar, wearing an expensive suit, marrying the woman who swore she gave you everything you ever wanted. You thought I was broken. You thought I was defeated. You thought eighty million dollars was enough to buy my silence forever. You were wrong.

His breath hitched. His chest tightened until he could barely pull air into his lungs.

"Carter, what does it say?" Eleanor demanded, stepping closer, trying to peer over his shoulder. "Give me that ridiculous paper right now!"

Without answering, Carter reached into the box and pulled out the first of the four thick manila folders. He flipped it open.

Document One: The Paternity Registry and Genetic Sequencing Report.

The bold text at the top of the certified hospital document hit his eyes like a flashbang grenade.

Patient: Veronica Hale. DNA Paternity Match Analysis: Alleged Father: Carter Vance — 0.0% Probability. Biological Father: Marcus Vance (Deceased) / Secondary Match: Travis Cole — 99.9% Probability.

The church seemed to spin on its axis.

Carter staggered backward against the wooden pew, his face draining of all color. He looked up slowly from the paper, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and terrifying, fixing directly on Veronica.

"V-Veronica..." he choked out, the name tearing like glass from his throat. "What... what is this?"

Veronica’s face had gone completely white, draining of every drop of rouge and foundation until she looked like a corpse in a wedding dress. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out—only a choked, panicked gasp.

"Carter, don't be ridiculous," Eleanor stammered, stepping forward and snatching the paper from his nerveless fingers. Her eyes scanned the medical header, the genetic markers, the notarized signatures of three separate independent laboratories in Zurich and Sydney.

Eleanor’s knees buckled. If the church pew hadn't caught her, she would have hit the floor.

"This... this is a forgery," Veronica shrieked suddenly, her voice cracking with hysterical panic as she tore off her bridal veil and threw it onto the floor. "She made it up! Sarah is a vindictive, lying bitch who couldn't give you children, so she's trying to destroy us!"
