Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the ArchiveThe beam of the flashlight cut through decades of undisturbed dust, illuminating a space no larger than a walk-in closet, but engineered like a subterranean bunker.

Julian stepped inside. Ethan followed closely behind, hand resting near his sidearm.

There were no gold bars, no stacks of illicit cash, and no priceless stolen art. Instead, the small concrete-reinforced room was lined floor-to-ceiling with metal filing cabinets, high-end hard drives, and cardboard bankers' boxes labeled with meticulous, chilling precision.

Julian walked slowly to the nearest cabinet, his hand trembling as he pulled open the top drawer.

Inside lay thick manila folders, each marked with a red sticker and a familiar name. He pulled the first one out. Emblazoned across the cover in bold black marker was a name that made his stomach drop into a bottomless pit: ARTHUR VANCE – FORMER CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER.

Julian opened the folder. Inside were bank statements, wire transfer receipts to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and high-resolution photographs of Arthur Vance meeting secretly in underground parking garages with a man whose face Julian recognized instantly.

It was his father’s most trusted legal counsel. The man who had handled the Marsh Estate bankruptcy scare fifteen years ago—a scare that had miraculously vanished overnight.

"What is this?" Julian muttered, pulling out another file. ELENA ROZANOV – HEAD OF ACQUISITIONS. Inside: medical records, fabricated debt notices, and signed coercion agreements.

File after file, box after box. It was a systematic, ruthless archive of corporate execution, blackmail, and destruction. Every major rival company that had mysteriously collapsed, every board member who had suddenly resigned due to 'health reasons,' every hostile takeover that had cemented Marsh Industries as an untouchable global empire—the bloodied receipts were all sitting right here in this hidden wall.

Julian felt the air leave his lungs. His father, Edward Marsh—the man whose portrait watched over them with noble, benevolent gray eyes—hadn't been a brilliant visionary who built an empire on hard work and honest grit.

He had been a monster who ruled through fear, extortion, and ruin.

And Clare... what was Clare's file?

Julian spun around, his eyes darting to the back corner of the vault where a single, unmarked black metal box sat on a reinforced steel shelf.

"Ethan," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of life. "Bring me that box."

Ethan picked up the box and handed it over. It wasn't locked. Julian flipped the metal latches and lifted the lid.

Inside sat a stack of documents bearing the Marsh Industries letterhead, dated three weeks ago. On top was a marriage contract with a clause so monstrous, so completely sociopathic, that Julian had to read the words three separate times to make sure his mind wasn't failing him.

It wasn't an engagement ring of love. It was a corporate acquisition agreement. Clare Ashford wasn't Julian’s fiancée by choice; she was an operative planted by the board of directors—or worse, by the shadow syndicate that had truly controlled Edward Marsh—to ensure Julian signed away voting control of Marsh Industries on their wedding night.

And if he refused?

The final page of the file contained a death certificate. Not a fake one. A real one.

The death certificate of Julian’s biological mother, who the family had always claimed died of a sudden tragic illness when Julian was two years old.
