Chapter 4 - Blood on the LedgerThe words on the parchment weren't corporate contracts or blackmail notes. They were instructions.

“To my successor: If this vault is ever opened by anyone other than myself or Clare Ashford, it means the security of Marsh Industries has been compromised from within. In the event of a breach, execute Protocol Ouroboros immediately. Detonate the subterranean vault charges. Erase the archives, seal the east wing, and leave no survivors.”
Julian stared at the signature at the bottom: Edward Marsh, Date: Yesterday.
Yesterday?
Edward Marsh had been dead for six months.
Julian’s mind spun violently. His father’s funeral had been massive, televised, and heavily attended. He had watched the mahogany casket lower into the earth. He had thrown the first handful of damp soil over the polished wood.
How could he have signed a document yesterday?
"Surprised?"
Julian whipped his head around. Clare stood at the entrance of the vault, blocking Ethan’s path with a small, matte-black remote control clutched in her hand. A small red LED light blinked rhythmically on its surface.
Ethan’s eyes widened. "Sir, step back. That’s a remote detonator."
"Drop your weapon, Ethan," Clare commanded, her voice terrifyingly steady. "Unless you want the structural integrity of this century-old foundation to collapse straight down onto the dining room. There are forty high-society guests eating dessert right now, not to mention a cleaning woman and her toddler."
Julian rose slowly to his feet, his face drained of all color. "You're insane. You're going to kill everyone here?"
"I'm not going to kill anyone if you do exactly as I say," Clare replied, her eyes locked on Julian with fanatical intensity. "Your father didn't die of a heart attack six months ago, Julian. He faked his death to flush out the traitors within the board of directors. But he miscalculated. The board turned on him first. They locked him away in a private medical facility upstate, and they put me in charge of finishing his work."
"You lied to me about everything," Julian whispered, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical wound. "Every dinner, every touch, every smile—it was all a cage."
"It was protection!" Clare shouted, her composure cracking for a split second before she forced it back into place. "Do you have any idea what kind of men are coming through that North Gate right now? They aren't business partners, Julian. They are the syndicates your father partnered with to build this empire. And they know the vault is open."

Before Julian could answer, a loud, concussive BOOM shook the foundation of the estate.
Dust rained down from the ceiling of the portrait gallery. Shouts of panic echoed from the distant dining room as forty elite guests realized their champagne-soaked evening had turned into a war zone.
