Chapter 7 - The Tunnel Beneath the FloorBack in the service tunnels behind the estate’s grand kitchen, Ethan Cole moved like a ghost through the damp, concrete-lined corridors.

In one arm, he cradled the heavy black box containing the master archives. With his other hand, he firmly gripped the small, trembling hand of three-year-old Sophia, who was clutching her wooden horse tightly against her chest.

Dileia hurried right behind them, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her eyes wide with terror as distant explosions vibrated through the foundation walls.

"Mr. Cole," Dileia whispered hoarsely, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "Where... where does this tunnel lead?"

"Out," Ethan replied flatly, his tactical eyes scanning every shadow ahead. "Straight down to the old pump station near the riverbank. There’s an unmarked vehicle waiting there with encrypted comms. Once we surface, we disappear off the grid."

Suddenly, the overhead emergency lights in the tunnel flickered and died, plunging them into near-total darkness.

Ethan instantly stopped, dropping to one knee and drawing his sidearm. "Stay behind me," he hissed.

From the shadows ahead, a metallic scrape echoed through the dark pipe. Footsteps—heavy, deliberate, and entirely unhurried—were approaching from the direction of the river exit.

They were cut off.

"Mr. Cole?" Sophia whimpered softly, tugging on Ethan's tactical vest. "I'm scared. I want my wooden horse to protect us."

"Shh, sweetie," Dileia whispered, pulling her daughter into her arms and pressing her face into her shoulder.

Ethan raised his weapon toward the sound, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. He knew the odds. He was carrying classified evidence that powerful men would kill a thousand people to recover, and he had a mother and a child with him.

"Step out where I can see you," Ethan shouted into the darkness, his voice echoing off the curved concrete walls.

A slow, mocking chuckle resonated from the shadows.

A tall figure stepped into the dim beam of Ethan’s tactical flashlight. The man was wearing an expensive, tailored charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place in a damp drainage tunnel. He wore white leather gloves and held a silenced pistol pointed casually toward the floor.

"Ethan Cole," the man said smoothly, his voice carrying an icy, aristocratic polish. "Former CIA Directorate of Operations. You were always too competent for your own good. Hand over the black box, walk away with the cleaning woman and her brat, and I'll let you live to see tomorrow sunrise."

Ethan didn't lower his gun. "Director Vance," he said, his voice dripping with pure venom. "I thought you retired from state-sponsored wetwork a decade ago."

"Retirement is for men who lack imagination, Ethan," Vance smiled coldly, raising his silenced weapon. "Now... drop the box."
