Chapter 5 - The Trap is SprungBy 2:00 PM that afternoon, the atmosphere inside the Moretti family’s underground security hub—located beneath a seemingly abandoned brick warehouse near the Boston Harbor—was heavy with tension.

Hannah sat in a leather armchair in the corner of the surveillance room, watching three massive monitors display live camera feeds from around the city. Men in tactical gear moved with quiet precision, checking weapons and reviewing digital tracking logs.

Dominic stood near the main console, arms crossed over his broad chest, glaring at the center screen.

Eleanor sat calmly in a high-backed leather chair, sipping espresso as if she were waiting for a concert to begin. She looked over at Hannah, who was nervously twisting a paperclip between her fingers.

"You have a very unusual mind, Miss Brooks," Eleanor observed, her voice calm amidst the controlled chaos. "Most people in your position would be terrified. You look like a chess player calculating three moves ahead."

"I played a lot of chess in college," Hannah murmured, keeping her eyes on the monitor showing the exterior of L’Étoile du Nord. "Mostly because it was free, and the board didn't yell at you when you made a mistake."

"And now you're playing with real pieces," Eleanor noted softly. "Are you prepared for what happens next?"

Before Hannah could answer, the door to the security hub swung open. Two heavy-set guards dragged a gasping, pale-faced Victor Hale into the room, shoving him down onto his knees in the center of the concrete floor.

Victor’s designer shirt was stained with sweat, his hair disheveled, and his eyes wide with stark, raving terror.

"Please!" Victor whimpered, sobbing as he looked up at Dominic, who loomed over him like a monolith. "Mr. Moretti, I swear to God I didn't mean to! They threatened me! The New York syndicate—they said they’d break my legs, they said they’d burn the restaurant down!"

Dominic didn't say a word. He crouched down slowly until his face was inches from Victor’s. The silence in the room was suffocating.

"Victor," Dominic whispered, his voice dangerously soft. "Do you remember what happened the last time someone tried to sell our corporate registry to New York?"

Victor choked back a sob, shaking his head violently. "Please, Dominic—Mr. Moretti—I have a wife, I have kids—"

"You had a restaurant," Dominic corrected coldly. "Now you have a very short lifespan."

"Wait."

The single word cut through the room like a razor.

Dominic paused, glancing up as Eleanor stood from her chair and walked slowly toward the center of the room. Her heels clicked sharply against the concrete floor.

She stopped right in front of the trembling restaurant manager, looking down at him with an expression of profound disappointment.

"Killing Victor solves nothing, Dominic," Eleanor said smoothly. "It makes a mess, it draws federal attention, and it tells New York that we panic when they scratch our surface."

Victor looked up at Eleanor with desperate, watery eyes, grasping at straws. "Mrs. Moretti! Please! I can fix this! I can feed them bad information! I can tell Marcus Vance that your offshore accounts are being moved to Zurich! We can trap them!"

Eleanor stared down at him for a long, agonizing moment. Then, a cold, calculating smile spread across her face.

"You know, Victor," Eleanor said softly. "For once in your miserable, cowardly life... you've actually suggested something useful."

She turned her head toward the corner of the room, locking her piercing gaze onto Hannah Brooks.

"Miss Brooks," Eleanor called out, her voice echoing in the concrete vault. "Come here."

Hannah hesitated, then stood up and walked slowly toward the center of the room, stopping a few feet away from the weeping manager.

"You wanted to pay for that broken bottle of wine yesterday, didn't you?" Eleanor asked, her eyes gleaming with dark ambition.

May you like

Hannah swallowed hard. "Yes."

"Good," Eleanor said smoothly. "Because tonight, you are going to help us bankrupt the New York syndicate. And by the time we are finished, you won't just be paying for a bottle of wine... you'll be owning the entire restaurant."
