Chapter 6 - The Game of ShadowsThe rain was coming down in sheets over downtown Boston, blurring the neon lights of the Financial District into shimmering streaks of red and gold.

Inside the dimly lit corner booth of L’Étoile du Nord, Marcus Vance—senior federal prosecutor and aspiring federal judge—swirled a glass of vintage scotch, staring across the table at the young woman sitting opposite him.
It wasn't Victor Hale who had brought him the flash drive tonight.
It was Hannah Brooks.
She wore a simple black turtleneck and a tailored blazer, her blonde hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail. She looked every bit the professional corporate consultant, though her heart was hammering so violently against her ribs she was certain Vance could hear it.
"I must admit, Miss Brooks," Vance said, a patronizing smile playing on his thin lips as he slipped the small black USB drive into his leather portfolio. "When Victor told me he had someone on the inside of the Moretti household willing to leak their secondary asset ledgers, I expected a disgruntled accountant, not a restaurant hostess."
"Hostess, waitress, coordinator—call it what you want, Mr. Vance," Hannah said, keeping her voice ice-cold and steady, exactly as Eleanor had coached her for three hours in the subterranean bunker. "People in my line of work see everything. We pour the wine while billionaires sign death warrants over dessert. We pick up the pieces when glass shatters. We know where the bodies are buried—literally."
Vance chuckled, leaning back against the leather cushions. He tapped the portfolio with a manicured finger. "And what does a clever young woman like you want in return for forty million dollars in verified Moretti capital?"
"Protection," Hannah said without missing a beat. "And a clean slate. When the federal indictment drops tomorrow morning and Dominic and Eleanor Moretti are arrested for racktax evasion and financial fraud, the syndicate is going to look for someone to blame for the leak. I want a one-way ticket to London, a secured identity, and five hundred thousand dollars deposited into an un-traceable Swiss account before the arrest warrants are even signed."
Vance’s eyes lit up with predatory greed. Forty million in seized assets, a slam-dunk federal corruption case against Boston’s most untouchable crime family, and a guaranteed headline on the front page of every national newspaper by sunrise. It was the golden ticket to a federal judgeship.
"Done," Vance said smoothly, sliding a folded document across the table. "Sign the witness protection waiver, and your transfer will clear by midnight."
Hannah picked up the pen, her hand steady. She looked at the signature line, knowing that every word she had just spoken was being recorded, encrypted, and streamed live to a secure terminal inside the Moretti estate on Beacon Hill.
She signed her name in bold, crisp letters.
"Pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Vance," Hannah said, standing up and sliding her coat over her shoulders.
"Enjoy London, Miss Brooks," Vance smirked, raising his glass of scotch in a silent toast.
Hannah walked out of the restaurant into the freezing rain, climbed into the back of a waiting black Lincoln Navigator, and watched through the tinted window as Marcus Vance eagerly plugged the USB drive into his encrypted laptop.
She didn't know that the flash drive didn't contain Moretti financial data.
It contained a self-executing military-grade malware worm custom-coded by the best hackers in Eastern Europe—a digital Trojan horse designed by Eleanor Moretti to siphon every single dollar out of the New York syndicate’s offshore accounts and route them directly into a charitable trust bearing Hannah’s name.
As the Lincoln pulled away from the curb, Dominic turned around from the front passenger seat, looking back at Hannah with a grin that was half-terrified, half-impressed.
"Well, Ma," Dominic muttered into his encrypted comms unit. "The girl just sold us out to the federal government."

Eleanor’s voice crackled through the secure speaker from Beacon Hill, cool, steady, and terrifyingly calm.
"No, Dominic," Eleanor replied. "She just delivered our enemies straight to our doorstep. Now... let the harvest begin."
