Chapter 13 - The Poisoned Well

I burst into the nursery, Marcus right behind me with his gun raised.
Jessica was tied to a chair in the corner, a piece of heavy duct tape across her mouth, her eyes wide with terror. Beside her, on the rug, Olivia lay motionless, her face pale, her breathing shallow and ragged.
"Jess!" I slammed my knees onto the floor, tearing the tape off her mouth and undoing the ropes.
"Gabriel! Evelyn... it was Evelyn!" Jessica choked out, weeping uncontrollably as she gathered Olivia into her arms. "She put something in Olivia’s juice! She said if I made a sound, she would give her the lethal dose!"
Marcus immediately radioed for emergency medical services and put out a city-wide APB on Evelyn Miller. I pulled my little girl against my chest, feeling her icy skin and thready pulse.
"Daddy..." Olivia weakly whimpered, opening her eyes just a fraction. "The lady... she took the brass key from Mommy's desk... she went down to the basement..."
The brass key. Elena’s key to the subterranean vault.
"Paramedics are downstairs," Marcus said, laying a heavy hand on my shoulder. "Take Jessica and Olivia down to the ambulance. I'll take a SWAT team into the subterranean level."
"No," I said, my voice dropping into an icy register I didn't recognize. "This is my house. This is my mother's legacy. I'm going with you."
"Gabriel, you're not a cop—"
May you like
"I am the owner of this building!" I snapped, pulling a heavy tactical flashlight from Marcus's trunk kit. "I know the layout of the underground tunnels better than anyone. Evelyn doesn't just work for Sterling. She’s doing this for Carmen."
As the paramedics rushed into the penthouse to stabilize Olivia, Marcus and I took the private service elevator straight down to the lowest level of Grandview Tower—Level B4, a forgotten damp basement beneath the foundations of the skyscraper.
