Chapter 15 - The Sister in the Shadows

The silence that followed was suffocating.

"She's your biological daughter..." I breathed, the horrific truth piecing itself together in my head. "Carmen didn't just steal me. She had a daughter of her own three years later... and she abandoned you when she realized you weren't useful to her scams."

"She didn't abandon me! She protected me!" Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking with raw, unhinged emotion. "She sent me to boarding schools! She kept me away from her life until you destroyed her! You took everything from her, Gabriel! You stole her happiness, her money, her home!"

"She poisoned my wife! She burned my five-year-old child's hands with acid!" I yelled back, stepping out from behind the pillar into full view, ignoring Marcus’s frantic hand signals to stay back. "Look at me, Evelyn! Look at what she turned you into! You poisoned a five-year-old girl today! Is that who you are?!"

Evelyn stood in the dim light thirty feet away, wearing a dark tactical jacket, a heavy 9mm handgun pointed directly at my chest. Her hands were shaking violently. Tears were cutting clear tracks through the grime on her cheeks.

"She told me... she told me it was just a sleeping drug..." Evelyn sobbed, her finger trembling on the trigger. "She said Olivia wouldn't be hurt..."

"It was a neurotoxin," I said softly, taking a slow step toward her. "The same stuff she used on Jessica. If we hadn't found her, Olivia would be dead in an hour. Carmen lied to you, Evelyn. Just like she lied to me for thirty-four years. She doesn't love you. She uses people until they are broken, and then she throws them away."

Evelyn lowered the gun by an inch, her lip quivering. "No... no..."

Before she could lower it further, a heavy iron door behind her burst open. A towering man in a black tactical suit stepped out from the shadow of the open vault, holding a heavy silenced pistol.

"You talk too much, little girl," the man grunted.
