Chapter 19 - The Vault’s Final Secret

I charged into the penthouse hallway just as Carmen raised the bottle of acid.
"NO!"
I tackled Carmen at full speed, knocking her off her feet. The glass bottle flew from her hand, shattering against the marble floor ten feet away, the caustic chemical hissing and burning deep grooves into the expensive hardwood rug.
Carmen fought like a frantic animal, scratching at my face, her thick fingernails digging into my skin. "You ungrateful parasite! I gave you a name! I made you!"
"You didn't give me anything!" I roared, grabbing her wrists and pinning them against the floor. "You were just a shadow in my life!"
Suddenly, the heavy blast doors at the end of the hallway were blown off their hinges with a deafening EXPLOSION.
Smoke and dust filled the penthouse as Marcus and a full squad of heavily armed SWAT officers poured through the entrance, red laser sights cutting through the dark gloom.
"POLICE! HANDS IN THE AIR! DON'T MOVE!"
Carmen froze beneath me, her wild, hysterical eyes reflecting the flashing red and blue lights bouncing off the rain-slicked windows.
From the subterranean elevator shaft behind the SWAT team, two officers dragged a handcuffed, bleeding Victor Sterling into the room. He was covered in soot, his expensive suit ruined.
"We swept the vault, Vance," Marcus said, stepping forward with his gun trained on Carmen. "Sterling tried to clear the drive, but your biological mother’s security system triggered an automatic blackout trap. The entire contents of the Sterling Syndicate ledgers—every bribe, every hit, every illegal transaction—have been live-broadcasted directly to the FBI mainframe."
Sterling glared at Carmen with lethal fury. "You set me up, you old witch," he spat.
"No! Victor! I didn't know!" Carmen shrieked, squirming under my grip. "Zayden! Tell them! Help your mother!"

I stood up slowly, stepping back from her, wiping the blood from my cheek. I looked down at the woman who had terrorized my family, her web of lies finally stripped away until nothing was left but a pathetic, broken criminal.
"I don't have a mother named Carmen," I said quietly. "And you don't have a son."
