Chapter 10 - The Last Sealed Envelope and the Ultimate Twist

Clara handed me a dusty, wax-sealed envelope with my birth name written on the front in delicate cursive handwriting: To My Son, Gabriel Vance.

With Jessica standing beside me, holding my hand, I broke the wax seal and pulled out a handwritten letter along with a set of old brass keys and a legal document.

As I read the letter aloud, my breath caught in my throat:

"My dearest Gabriel,

If you are reading this, it means you have found your way back to where you belong. I never stopped searching for you. Not for a single second.

Before I was taken sick, I discovered who took you. I tracked down Nurse Carmen Ferris to Baltimore three years after you disappeared. I saw you playing in a park when you were four years old. You were happy, laughing, and safe. I wanted to run to you, grab you, and take you back. But the doctors told me my heart was failing, and I knew that forcing you into a messy legal battle with a lying monster would destroy your fragile young world.

Instead of taking you away then, I dedicated my remaining years to securing your future. I bought the land beneath the old industrial quarter in Phoenix under a trust in your real name, Gabriel Vance. I knew that city would grow. I knew one day you would settle there.

Carmen took your childhood, my sweet boy, but she could never take your destiny. The keys in this envelope belong to the land trust that owns the very high-rise development where your current apartment sits. You don't just live in that building, Gabriel... you own it."

My jaw dropped in absolute shock. I looked up at Jessica, then at Detective Vance, who smiled with a knowing glint in his eye.

The spacious apartment on Grandview Avenue—the very home where Carmen had tried to act like a queen, where she had lorded over my wife and forced my daughter into chemical labor—didn't belong to a landlord. Through my real mother's foresight and ultimate sacrifice, the entire luxury complex was part of the Vance Estate, legally inherited by me the moment my true identity was validated.

Carmen had spent years boasting to her freeloading friends that "a woman can live like a queen here," never realizing that the very roof over her head belonged to the son she had stolen—and the mother she had robbed.

One year later, Jessica, Olivia, and I stood on the top balcony of the Grandview Tower, looking out over the shining lights of Phoenix. Olivia was laughing, running freely across the open terrace without fear, her soft skin fully restored and glowing in the twilight.

Jessica wrapped her arms around my waist, resting her head gently against my chest.

"What are you thinking about, Gabriel?" she asked softly, using my real name with love.

I smiled, taking a deep breath of the cool night air, feeling an overwhelming sense of peace settled deep in my soul.
