Chapter 2 - Red Hands and Chemical Secrets

Carmen’s reaction was instantaneous and hysterical. "She’s lying! The child is lying! Jessica taught her to say that! Zayden, your wife is insane, she’s ruining this family!"

Jessica didn't say a word. She couldn't. She collapsed onto the kitchen tiles, clutching her knees to her chest, trembling violently. The wet bandage around her hand was coming undone, revealing raw, weeping flesh underneath.

I dropped to my knees beside my wife and daughter, pulling them both into my arms. Olivia’s body was burning up with fever, her small hands shaking against my chest. When I touched the soapy water remaining in the sink, my skin immediately began to sting.

This wasn't just hot water.

I looked down into the sink and spotted two empty bottles of industrial-strength caustic lye drain cleaner hidden beneath the dishes. Carmen hadn't just made them wash dishes with boiling water—she had poured concentrated chemical solvent directly into the wash basin to force them to clean faster, intentionally burning their skin.

"You monster," I whispered, staring up at Carmen.

Within seven minutes, the hallway echoed with the thunderous pounding of heavy boots. Four uniformed police officers and three paramedics burst through the unlocked front door. The scene they encountered was grotesque: twenty wealthy women cowering in expensive clothing, a kitchen floor covered in blood and chemical foam, and a mother and child clinging to a tear-streaked husband.

"Who called 911?" Lead Officer Miller demanded, his hand resting on his sidearm as he took in the scene.

"I did," I said, standing up. "My wife and daughter need emergency burn treatment. And that woman—my mother—has been holding them under cruel, chemical torture."

The paramedics rushed forward with specialized cool dressings and burn kits. As the lead paramedic gently wrapped Olivia’s little wrists, he looked up at Officer Miller with grim fury. "These are chemical acid burns, Officer. Third-degree on the adult, high second-degree on the child. We need to transport them to the burn unit at St. Jude’s immediately."

"No!" Carmen screamed, stepping forward aggressively. "Officer, this is a family misunderstanding! I am the head of this household! My son is under the influence of his crazy wife!"

Officer Miller didn't hesitate. "Ma'am, step back! Officers, secure the room. Nobody leaves. Ma'am, place your hands behind your back."

"You can't arrest me!" Carmen howled as silver handcuffs snapped shut around her wrists. "Zayden! Tell them! I am your mother!"

"You're not a mother," I said softly, looking her dead in the eye. "You're a predator. And now we're going to open that locked drawer."
