Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail of Greed
Over the next forty-eight hours, federal investigators and local police executed a total search warrant on our apartment and Carmen's financial records. What they unearthed was a massive web of deceit that spanned across four different states.
Detective Vance called me into his office at the precinct. Sprawled across his desk were dozens of bank statements, fake identification cards, and legal deeds.
"Your 'mother' was far more industrious than we thought, Zayden," Vance explained, pointing to a series of financial ledgers. "For the past three years, she was running a black-market pharmaceutical ring using stolen doctor credentials. But even worse—she took out three massive life insurance policies on your wife, Jessica."
I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. "Life insurance?"
"Three separate policies totaling 2.5 million dollars," Vance said gravely. "With you named as the primary beneficiary, and Carmen named as the secondary trustee in the event that you were deemed emotionally incapacitated. If Jessica had died from 'accidental chemical exposure' or an 'overdose of her medication,' Carmen was set to collect millions."
"She was going to kill her," I breathed, collapsing into a chair. "She was slowly poisoning her to make it look like a suicide or an accidental death."
"Exactly," Vance nodded. "And it gets deeper. Remember the party guests who were in your house when you came home?"
"The twenty women?"
"They weren't high-society friends," Vance revealed with a dark smile. "They were local illegal gamblers and loan sharks. Carmen owed over $300,000 in underground gambling debts from casinos in Atlantic City. She was hosting those lavish dinners using your money to buy time from her creditors, promising them that a 'huge payout' was coming very soon."

The depth of her wickedness was breathtaking. She had brought violent, dangerous criminals into the very home where my child slept, using my home as a playground for her depravity while my family suffered in silence.
"We have enough evidence to put her away for the rest of her natural life," Vance said, slapping a heavy file folder shut. "Kidnapping, attempted murder, child endangerment, grand larceny, identity theft, and distribution of controlled substances. She will never see the daylight as a free woman again."
