Chapter 1 - THE BLOOD ON THE MARBLE

The silence inside the luxury hospital suite didn’t just hang in the air—it suffocated.
Marcus Thorne stood frozen in the doorway, his tall frame blocking the soft glow of the hallway lights. His tailored Tom Ford tuxedo was sharp, precise, and immaculate, but the man beneath it was unraveling at a terrifying speed. His eyes, usually cold and calculating enough to bring down rival CEOs in boardrooms across North America, were locked onto the floor.
On the polished white marble, Khloe Thorne—his seven-month-pregnant wife—was curled into a tight, defensive ball. Her once-radiant silk maternity gown was shredded at the hem, smeared with dirt, and stained with the dark, terrifying crimson of her own blood. Her fingernails were dug deep into the floor tiles, her hands desperately shielding her protruding abdomen. She wasn't making a sound. The agony had stripped her voice away, leaving only ragged, desperate gasps for air.
"Marcus... oh, thank God, Marcus!"
The silence shattered as Isabella Rossi burst into tears. It was a masterclass in deception. In less than two seconds, the vicious predator who had just delivered a brutal kick to a pregnant woman vanished. In her place stood a trembling, terrified victim.
Isabella took two quick, frantic steps toward Marcus, her blood-red silk gown swaying around her legs like a stain. She reached out, her hands trembling, her chest heaving with theatrical sobs.
"She lost her mind, Marcus! I came up here just to check on her... to give her some water because I knew she was exhausted from the gala. But she snapped! She accused me of trying to steal you away. She grabbed a champagne glass, smashed it, and threw herself at me! I tried to hold her back, Marcus, I swear I did! She fell... she did this to herself!"
Beside Marcus, Elaine Parker, the event coordinator, gasped and slapped a hand over her mouth. Her eyes darted wildly between the broken glass, Isabella’s tear-streaked face, and the dying light in Khloe’s eyes. "Oh my God... should I call security? Should I call the police?" Elaine whispered, her voice panicked.
Isabella moved closer, attempting to wrap her arms around Marcus’s waist, resting her tear-stained cheek against his chest. "Marcus, please... look at me. She’s trying to frame me. She knows how much you care about your family reputation. She’s doing this to destroy us both!"
For three agonizing seconds, Marcus didn't move. He didn't embrace Isabella, nor did he push her away. He simply stared down at his wife.
To anyone watching, it looked as though Marcus was trapped in Isabella’s trap. For weeks, Isabella had carefully fed him subtle, toxic lies—insinuating that Khloe was mentally unstable, that the pregnancy was overwhelming her, that she was becoming paranoid and dangerous. Isabella had cultivated this exact moment for months. She truly believed that in a room with no witnesses, her word as the daughter of the city’s second-most powerful family would easily outweigh a broken, bleeding woman’s quiet protests.
Isabella smirked internally against Marcus’s jacket. I won, she thought. She’s bleeding out, and he’s holding me.
Slowly, Marcus reached up. His long fingers gently grasped Isabella’s shoulders.
Isabella let out a soft, relieved sigh. "Oh, Marcus..."
Then, Marcus pulled her off him.
He didn't do it with passion or rage. He did it with cold, absolute detachment, as if he were removing a piece of lint from his lapel. His grip on her shoulders tightened—not affectionately, but like steel cuffs locking into place. He turned his head and looked directly into Isabella’s eyes.
There was no warmth in his gaze. There was no doubt. There was only an abyss.
"Elaine," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm. It wasn't loud, but it possessed a weight that made the room freeze.
"Y-yes, Mr. Thorne?" Elaine squeaked.
"Lock the suite door from the outside. No one enters. No one leaves. If Isabella steps one foot out of this room before I say so, I will buy your event company by midnight and ruin every single person who works for it."
Isabella’s breath hitched. Her teary-eyed act faltered for a fraction of a second. "Marcus? What are you saying? She’s the one who—"
"Shut your mouth, Isabella," Marcus whispered. The tone was so dark it sent a shudder straight down her spine.
Suddenly, heavy, hurried footsteps echoed down the hallway outside. The door burst open again.
A tall man in his late fifties, wearing a sharp charcoal suit beneath an unbuttoned white lab coat, rushed into the room. His hair was silvering at the temples, and his face was set in a scowl of pure, unadulterated fury. Behind him were four armed hospital security guards and two chief trauma surgeons pushing an emergency gurney.
This was Dr. Arthur Vance. He wasn't just the Chief of Surgery and Chairman of the hospital board.
He was Khloe’s maternal uncle.
Arthur took in the scene in a single glance. He saw the blood. He saw the shattered crystal. He saw his niece clinging to life on the cold floor. And then he saw Isabella Rossi standing nearby, looking flustered.
"Khloe!" Arthur roared, dropping to his knees beside his niece instantly. He pushed his coat back and placed two fingers against her neck, checking her pulse while his free hand pressed gently against her stomach. "Trauma team, now! Placental abruption protocol! Prepare OR 3 immediately!"
The surgeons moved with frantic precision, lifting Khloe’s frail body onto the gurney. As they lifted her, Khloe groaned, her eyes opening just enough to catch her uncle’s face.
"Uncle Arthur..." she whimpered, her voice barely a thread. "...the baby..."
"I've got you, sweetheart. I’ve got you," Arthur said, his voice cracking with emotion before hardening into iron. He turned to the lead surgeon. "Get her downstairs! Save my grand-nephew or none of you work in this hemisphere again!"
As the medical team wheeled Khloe out, Marcus made a step to follow them, his face pale. But Arthur stepped directly into his path, placing a hand on Marcus’s chest, holding the billionaire back.
"You stay right here, Marcus," Arthur growled, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and rage.
"Arthur, she’s my wife! That’s my child!" Marcus snapped, his icy composure finally cracking.
"You let this happen!" Arthur sneered, glaring at Marcus before turning a deadly gaze onto Isabella, who was slowly backing toward the corner of the room. "And as for you, Miss Rossi..."
Isabella put her hands up, her fake tears drying instantly, replaced by a defensive sneer. "Don't you dare accuse me, Dr. Vance. You're her family. You're biased! She attacked me first! I was defending myself!"
Arthur let out a bitter, echoing laugh. He didn't look angry anymore; he looked like a predator who had just watched his prey step into a steel trap.
"Defending yourself?" Arthur asked softly. He reached into his lab coat, pulled out a encrypted master tablet, and tapped the screen twice. "You spent six months in Paris, Isabella, so perhaps you forgot. This hospital suite isn't just a luxury room. It’s part of the Vance VIP Pavilion. Every room in this wing is equipped with high-definition, thermal, and audio multi-angle security feeds for high-profile patients."
Isabella’s face drained of every ounce of color. The blood rushed out of her head so fast she felt dizzy. "What...?"
Arthur turned the tablet around.
On the bright 4K screen, a crisp, flawless video began to play. The audio was crystal clear.
“You were supposed to know your place,” Isabella’s recorded voice rang out in the quiet suite, cruel and venomous. “Smile for the cameras. Give him an heir. Then disappear.”
On the screen, everyone in the room watched in horrifying clarity as Isabella shoved Khloe into the marble table. They watched Khloe collapse. They watched Isabella stride forward, her face twisted in malice, and bring her stiletto heel down violently into Khloe’s pregnant abdomen.
They heard the sickening thud. They heard Khloe’s agonizing scream.
The room fell into a dead silence so deep you could hear the hum of the air conditioning.
Isabella stood paralyzed. Her lips trembled, but no sound came out. Her mind raced, searching for an excuse, a bribe, a connection—anything to claw her way out of this nightmare. "That... that’s fake," she whispered, her voice cracking. "That’s AI! You edited that!"
Marcus didn't say a word. He didn't shout. He didn't throw a punch.
Instead, he walked slowly toward Isabella. With every step he took, the temperature in the room seemed to plummet. He stopped inches away from her. The man who had spent months listening to her subtle whisperings now looked at her as if she were something lower than an insect.
"Elaine," Marcus said quietly, without breaking eye contact with Isabella.
"Y-yes, Mr. Thorne?"
"Call the Chief of Police. Tell him to bring maximum security transport." Marcus reached out and gently plucked a strand of hair from Isabella’s trembling shoulder. "And tell him that if Isabella Rossi leaves police custody for any reason before her trial, I will buy every debt her family’s company holds and bankrupt them by sunrise."
Isabella fell to her knees, clutching Marcus’s pants leg. "Marcus, please! I did it for us! She was standing in our way! You don't love her! You were supposed to be with me!"
Marcus kicked his leg back, dislodging her grip as if she were filth. He didn't offer her another glance as he turned and walked out of the suite, rushing toward the surgical wing.
Behind him, two heavy-set security guards seized Isabella by her arms, dragging her screaming and kicking out of the room.
Downstairs, in Operating Room 3, the heart monitors were screaming.
"Her blood pressure is dropping through the floor!" the anesthesiologist yelled. "We're losing the fetal heartbeat!"
Arthur burst through the double doors, tearing off his jacket and scrubbing in within seconds. He rushed to Khloe’s side. Her skin was gray, cold, and clammy.
"Khloe, stay with me!" Arthur shouted, grabbing her hand. "Look at me!"
Khloe’s eyelids fluttered. Her vision was blurry, filled with the harsh white lights of the operating theater. She could hear the frantic rhythm of the crash cart. She could feel her life slipping away, trailing off into a quiet, painless darkness.
"Uncle..." she whispered, her chest barely moving. "Tell Marcus... he got... what he wanted..."
"Don't speak like that! Hold on!"
"The baby..." Khloe’s head rolled to the side. The heart monitor went from a frantic beep to a flat, continuous, terrifying tone.
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE...
"Flatline! She’s in cardiac arrest!"
Outside the operating room doors, Marcus slammed his fist into the wall, breaking the knuckles of his right hand. Blood trickled down his skin, but he didn't feel it. All he could hear was the distant, piercing sound of the flatline alarm inside.
He dropped his head against the glass, closing his eyes in sheer agony.
He thought this was the worst night of his life. He thought he was losing his wife and his child to the madness of Isabella Rossi.
He had no idea that the attack in the hospital suite was only the first falling domino.
Because miles away, in a darkened mansion on the edge of the city, a phone buzzed on a mahogany desk. A hand picked it up.
"Is it done?" a voice asked into the receiver.
"Isabella took the bait," a raspy voice replied from the other end. "She attacked Khloe just like you planned. The police have her. Marcus is ruined, and Khloe is dying."
May you like
The person at the desk let out a long, dark laugh.
"Good. Isabella thinks she did this for love. Marcus thinks he’s playing the protector. Neither of them realizes that Khloe’s pregnancy was never the target. It was the key."
