Chapter 3 - THE RAIN OF FIRE

The rain poured down in torrential sheets over the gothic spires of St. Jude Sanatorium, a fortress-like psychiatric facility tucked away in the dense woodlands forty miles outside the city limits. High stone walls, topped with razor wire and guarded by private security personnel, ensured that no one came in—and no one got out—without explicit authorization.

Inside Room 402, Isabella Rossi was pacing like a trapped animal.

She was no longer wearing her grand crimson gown. She was dressed in a dull, oversized white institutional gown. Her hair was matted, her expensive makeup smeared across her face. The high-strung, arrogant socialite who had kicked a pregnant woman six hours ago was now visibly unravelling.

"You said I would be safe here!" Isabella screamed, turning to face Julian Vance, who was standing casually near the room’s reinforced steel door, sipping espresso from a porcelain cup.

Julian looked handsome, sharp, and utterly unbothered. He wore a charcoal grey bespoke suit, his silk tie neatly pinned. He looked like a man attending an afternoon tea, not a conspirator in a near-fatal assault.

"Quiet down, Isabella. You’re in a psychiatric ward. Screaming only makes you look more... unstable," Julian said smoothy, taking a slow sip of his coffee.

"Marcus knows!" Isabella panicked, grabbing Julian by his lapels. "He watched the video! He saw me kick her! He’s going to kill me, Julian! You promised me if I did this, Marcus would come running to me! You said he was sick of her, that he was only with her for the inheritance!"

Julian gently, almost mockingly, detached her fingers from his suit jacket and pushed her back.

"And you actually believed me?" Julian smiled, a soft, pathetic laugh escaping his lips. "God, Isabella, you really are as stupid as you are vanity-obsessed."

Isabella froze. "What... what did you say?"

"Marcus loves her. He has always loved her," Julian sneered, his warm facade dropping to reveal a cold, reptilian monster. "I needed someone desperate enough, foolish enough, and obsessed enough to commit a public, undeniable crime against Khloe. If I hired a hitman, the police would trace it back to my bank accounts. But a jealous, heartbroken ex-lover? That’s a passion crime. That’s tabloid news. That distracts everyone while I seize control of the board."

Isabella’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "You... you used me."

"Of course I used you," Julian said smoothly, reaching into his inner jacket pocket and pulling out a small glass vial and a pre-filled syringe. "And now, like any good tool that has served its purpose, you need to be disposed of."

Isabella backed away, her hands shaking uncontrollably, her heel catching on the edge of the bed. "Julian... no. Please! I won't say a word! I’ll sign whatever you want! I’ll leave the country!"

"You're a loose end, Isabella," Julian sighed, tapping the syringe to clear the air bubbles. "The police are already asking questions about the money transfers. If you go to trial, you’ll cut a deal with the prosecutor to save yourself. But if you suffer a tragic, stress-induced cardiac arrest in your sleep tonight... well, the story ends. Marcus mourns his wife, I inherit the Vance estate, and you become a cautionary tale about extreme jealousy."

Julian signaled to two heavy-set guards standing by the door. They stepped forward, their massive hands reaching for Isabella.

"No! Get away from me! Help!" Isabella shrieked, kicking and flailing as the guards pinned her against the mattress.

Julian stepped closer, holding the syringe, aiming directly for her neck. "Shh... it’s okay, Isabella. It’ll be over in a second—"

BOOM!

The floor beneath them shook violently as a deafening explosion shattered the quiet night. The glass windows of the room blew inward, raining sharp shards across the floor. The emergency alarms immediately began to wail, flashing bright red lights throughout the corridor.

"What the hell was that?!" Julian cursed, dropping the syringe as the lights flickered and died, leaving only the blood-red strobe of the emergency alarms.

Outside, gunfire echoed through the rain—sharp, disciplined, automatic weapon bursts.

Before the guards could pull their sidearms, the heavy steel door of Room 402 was hit with a breaching charge.

BANG!

The door blew off its hinges, crushing one of Julian’s guards against the far wall. Through the smoke and fire stepped four men dressed in tactical black gear, wearing night-vision goggles and carrying suppressed assault rifles.

At the front of the assault squad was Marcus Thorne.

He was no longer wearing his tuxedo. He wore a dark tactical vest over a black sweater. His eyes were cold, dead, and focused entirely on Julian Vance.

"Marcus?!" Julian gasped, backing away in absolute shock. "How... how did you find this place?!"

Marcus didn't answer. He stepped over the fallen guard, grabbed Julian by his expensive silk tie, and slammed him hard into the concrete wall.

THUD!

Julian let out a gasp of pain as his head hit the concrete. "Marcus! Wait! This is a misunderstanding! I was trying to help—"

Marcus drove a devastating right hook straight into Julian’s ribs.

Julian crumpled to his knees, wheezing, clutching his side. "Marcus... please... we’re family..."

"Family?" Marcus growled, reaching down, grabbing Julian by his hair, and pulling his face up. "You paid this lunatic to murder my child. You tried to butcher my wife on a hospital floor. You aren't family, Julian. You're a corpse that hasn't stopped breathing yet."

Marcus pulled a heavy tactical handgun from his holster and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against Julian’s forehead.

"Marcus, no!" Isabella screamed from the bed, cowering in terror.

Julian’s eyes were wide with pure, unadulterated fear. Tears mingled with the sweat pouring down his face. "Marcus... think about Khloe! If you kill me, you go to prison! She loses everything! Don't do this!"

Marcus’s finger tightened on the trigger. The cold rage inside him demanded blood. He wanted to pull the trigger. He wanted to hear the sound. He wanted to end the man who had torn his family apart.

Click.

His phone in his tactical pocket began to ring. It was a specific, priority ringtone set for Dr. Arthur Vance.

Marcus didn't break eye contact with Julian, but he reached into his pocket and answered the call on speaker.

"Speak," Marcus said, his voice trembling with dark energy.

"Marcus!" Arthur’s voice boomed over the speaker, sounding panicked and breathless. "Where are you?! You need to get back to the hospital right now!"

"I’m taking care of the trash," Marcus said coldly, pressing the gun harder against Julian’s skull.

"Listen to me, Marcus! Drop whatever you're doing and COME BACK!" Arthur shouted. "Khloe just woke up from her coma!"

Marcus froze. The murderous rage in his chest paused. "What? She woke up?"

"Yes! But Marcus... something is wrong," Arthur’s voice cracked with a strange, terrifying emotion. "Something is very wrong with her. She doesn't know where she is... and Marcus... she doesn't know who you are."
