Chapter 4 - THE STRANGER IN THE MIRROR

The rain outside the medical center had turned into a dull, gray drizzle by the time Marcus returned.

He moved through the VIP floor corridors like a ghost, his steps silent, his face pale. The tactical gear was gone, replaced by a fresh, dark suit, but his hands were trembling.

He pushed open the heavy wooden door to ICU Room 1.

The room was quiet. The harsh, frantic alarms from six hours ago were gone. The ventilator had been disconnected. Sitting up in the center of the large hospital bed, propped up by white pillows, was Khloe.

Her hair was brushed, falling softly over her shoulders. Her face was pale, almost translucent, but her dark eyes were wide open, staring blankly out the window at the gray sky.

Beside her, Arthur Vance was quietly adjusting an IV drip.

Marcus stood in the doorway, his heart pounding against his ribs harder than it had during the armed raid. "Khloe...?" he whispered softly, his voice full of hope and fear.

Khloe’s head turned slowly toward the sound of his voice.

Her eyes met his.

For months, whenever Khloe looked at Marcus, those eyes were filled with warmth, deep affection, and a subtle, knowing comfort. But now, as she looked at the billionaire standing before her, her gaze was completely hollow.

It was the look you give a stranger standing next to you in an elevator.

"Hello," Khloe said softly. Her voice was thin, rasping from the breathing tube that had been in her throat for hours. "Are you... another doctor?"

Marcus felt as if someone had plunged an ice pick straight into his chest. He took two cautious steps closer to the bed, holding out his hands, showing his bare palms.

"Khloe... it’s me. It’s Marcus."

Khloe blinked slowly. She looked at his face, examining his high cheekbones, his sharp jawline, his bloodshot eyes. She looked down at his left hand, noticing the platinum wedding band on his finger.

She raised her own left hand. Her ring finger was bare; her wedding ring had been removed prior to surgery.

"Marcus..." she repeated the name, testing the sound on her tongue. "I'm sorry... I know that name. I know I should know you... but I don't."

Marcus fell to his knees beside the bed, grabbing her hand. "Khloe, please. Look at me. We’ve been married for three years. You’re my wife."

Khloe pulled her hand back gently, wincing slightly at the sudden physical contact. "I... I don't remember a marriage. I don't remember... any of this."

Arthur placed a gentle hand on Marcus’s shoulder, pulling him back toward the door. "Marcus. Step outside with me. Now."

Marcus let himself be led out into the hallway. The moment the door shut behind them, Marcus rounded on Arthur, his eyes wild with desperation.

"What happened to her?! Why doesn't she remember me?!"

"Retrograde amnesia caused by hypoxic brain injury," Arthur explained, his tone heavy with medical authority and quiet grief. "When her heart stopped, her brain went without blood flow for nearly four minutes. The temporal lobes took the brunt of the damage. She remembers basic facts—she knows her name, she knows she’s an architect, she knows I’m her uncle because her long-term childhood memories are intact."

Arthur paused, taking a deep breath before delivering the final blow.

"But everything from the last four years... is completely gone. She doesn't remember meeting you. She doesn't remember your wedding. She doesn't remember Isabella..."

Arthur’s voice lowered to a whisper. "...and she doesn't remember being pregnant."

Marcus felt the ground sway beneath him. "She doesn't... she doesn't know about the baby?"

"I haven't told her yet," Arthur said softly. "Her cardiovascular system is extremely fragile. If I tell her she was brutally attacked, gave birth two months early via emergency surgery, and that her baby is currently fighting for his life in the NICU... the shock could cause another fatal cardiac arrest."

"So what do we do?!" Marcus demanded, his hands shaking. "Do we just lie to her?!"

"We tell her the truth gradually," Arthur insisted. "We let her heal physically before we crush her emotionally."

Suddenly, the elevator doors at the end of the hallway opened with a sharp chime.

Two uniformed police officers stepped out, accompanied by a sharp-looking woman in a navy suit carrying a briefcase. This was District Attorney Evelyn Cross—the most ruthless prosecutor in the state, known for tearing apart high-society criminals.

Evelyn walked directly up to Marcus and Arthur.

"Mr. Thorne. Dr. Vance," Evelyn said crisply. "I just came from the precinct. We have a major situation."

"Did Julian Vance confess?" Marcus asked coldly. "I had my security team hand him and Isabella directly over to state troopers outside St. Jude."

"Julian Vance isn't saying a word without his five lawyers," Evelyn replied. "But Isabella Rossi... she broke. She gave a full taped confession twenty minutes ago."

Marcus let out a harsh, dark laugh. "Good. Put her away for life."

"It’s not that simple, Mr. Thorne," Evelyn said, her eyes darkening. "Isabella confessed to the assault, yes. She admitted Julian paid her forty million dollars to eliminate Mrs. Thorne. But she also brought something else to the table. Something that changes everything."

Marcus’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"

Evelyn pulled a tablet out of her briefcase and swiped through a series of scanned legal documents. She handed the screen to Marcus.

"Isabella claims that six months ago, Khloe Thorne approached her privately."

Marcus froze. "What?"

"According to Isabella’s statement—which is backed up by bank transfer receipts signed with Khloe Thorne’s private digital signature—Khloe paid Isabella five hundred thousand dollars to start a fake public affair with you."

Marcus stared at the document on the screen. His mind raced, refusing to compute what he was seeing.

There, stamped on official banking documents dated six months ago, was Khloe’s personal signature. It authorized a massive wire transfer into Isabella’s personal account, with a memo line that read: Consulting Services - Project Divorce.

"That’s impossible," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling. "Khloe loved me. She was carrying my child!"

"Isabella claims Khloe was planning to frame you for marital infidelity so she could nullify your prenuptial agreement and take half of Thorne Enterprises," DA Evelyn Cross said calmly, looking Marcus straight in the eye. "Isabella says the plan went wrong when Julian got involved and offered her forty million to turn a fake affair into a real murder."

Evelyn leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"Mr. Thorne... according to Isabella's confession, your wife wasn't the innocent victim of a sudden attack. She was the architect of the entire game. And it backfired on her."

Marcus stood frozen in the quiet hospital corridor, the document glowing brightly in his hands.

He turned slowly and looked through the glass window of ICU Room 1.

Inside, Khloe was sitting calmly on her bed, looking out at the rain, innocent, fragile, and unable to remember a single thing.
