Chapter 6 - THE FINAL RECKONING

The glass doors of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit opened with a quiet hiss.

The room was dimly lit, filled with the soft, rhythmic chirping of medical monitors. In the center of the room stood a single incubator. Inside lay the tiny, fragile infant, his chest rising and falling rapidly under the clear plastic dome.

Marcus stood over the incubator.

He was dressed in a dark coat, his face completely devoid of emotion. He looked like a statue carved out of granite.

Behind him, the soft sound of a wheelchair rolling across the floor echoed in the quiet room.

Arthur Vance was pushing Khloe into the NICU.

Khloe was wearing a soft yellow cardigan over her hospital gown. Her pale skin was beginning to regain some color, but her eyes were still wide, filled with a mixture of confusion and quiet sorrow.

Arthur stopped the wheelchair beside Marcus.

"Khloe wanted to see him," Arthur whispered to Marcus, his voice filled with caution. "She’s been asking questions all morning."

Khloe looked up at Marcus. She still didn't remember him—not his touch, not his voice, not their years together. But as she looked at the tiny baby inside the incubator, a primal tear spilled over her eyelashes and ran down her cheek.

"Is he... is he mine?" Khloe asked softly, reaching a trembling hand out toward the glass.

Marcus didn't answer immediately. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the DNA test results, held tightly in his fist.

He had the power to destroy her in this exact moment.

He could throw the paper in her face. He could tell her that she was a paranoid strategist who had hired her own attacker. He could tell her that she had lied to him, betrayed him, and carried another man’s child while wearing his ring. He could walk away, take his billions, and leave her to drown in the ruin of her own making.

Isabella was in a high-security prison cell awaiting trial for attempted murder. Julian was facing life in federal prison for conspiracy and corporate fraud. The war was won. Marcus could walk away clean.

Marcus turned his head slowly and looked at Khloe.

She looked so small in the wheelchair. Her eyes were wide, clear, and totally devoid of the dark paranoia that had consumed her mind over the last six months. The trauma had wiped her slate completely clean. The woman sitting before him was the pure, gentle soul he had fallen in love with four years ago—before corporate greed and mental illness had poisoned her world.

Then, Marcus looked down at the tiny baby inside the incubator.

The infant’s tiny hand reached out blindly, his tiny fingers curling against the inside of the glass, fighting with every breath to stay alive in a world he had barely entered.

Marcus looked back at the DNA paper in his hand.

Slowly, without making a sound, Marcus crumpled the paper inside his coat pocket, tearing it into shreds.

He stepped closer to the wheelchair and dropped to one knee, putting himself at eye level with Khloe.

"Yes," Marcus said softly, his voice thick with a deep, silent grief that he would carry alone for the rest of his life. "He’s yours."

Khloe’s breath hitched. "And... are you his father?"

Marcus reached out. For the first time in days, he touched her face, his thumb gently wiping away the tear on her cheek.

He thought about the lies. He thought about the betrayal. He thought about the secret recording in his office.

And then he made a choice.

"I’m his father, Khloe," Marcus lied, his voice steady, ironclad, and absolute. "And I’m never going anywhere."

Khloe let out a quiet, shuddering sob of relief. She reached out and wrapped her arms around Marcus’s neck, pulling him close, resting her forehead against his shoulder. "Thank you... Marcus. I don't remember everything... but I feel like I'm safe with you."

"You are safe," Marcus whispered into her hair, his eyes closing as he held the woman who had broken his heart.

Over her shoulder, Marcus looked at Arthur Vance. Arthur knew. The old doctor had seen the paternity results earlier that morning. He knew the burden Marcus was choosing to carry. Arthur gave Marcus a slow, deeply respectful nod—a silent promise between two men to take the terrifying truth to their graves.

Three months later.

The sun was shining brightly over a secluded villa on the coast of Southern Italy.

The turquoise ocean waves crashed softly against the high cliffside rocks below. Sitting on a wide terrace overlooking the sea was Khloe. She looked healthy, radiant, her smile warm as she gently rocked a wooden cradle. Inside, healthy and thriving, was her baby boy.

The door to the villa opened, and Marcus stepped out onto the sunlit terrace carrying two cups of coffee. He wore a simple white linen shirt and trousers, looking relaxed, though the slight silvering at his temples revealed the weight he bore beneath his calm exterior.

He walked over, set the coffee down, and leaned over the cradle, letting the infant grab his finger with a surprisingly strong grip.

"He’s getting stronger every day," Khloe smiled, looking up at Marcus with eyes full of complete trust and deep affection. Her memory of the past had never returned—and Marcus had made sure the media, the legal trials, and the dark history of the Vance family were completely buried from her sight.

"He takes after his mother," Marcus smiled gently, kissing her forehead.

Khloe wrapped her hand around his arm, leaning her head against his side. "Sometimes... I feel like there's a dark shadow behind me, Marcus. Like I escaped a storm I can't remember."

Marcus looked out at the vast, endless horizon of the blue ocean.

"The storm is over, Khloe," Marcus said softly, his grip on her hand tightening protectively. "I destroyed it."

Khloe smiled, closing her eyes, feeling the warmth of the Mediterranean sun on her skin, completely safe in the arms of the billionaire who had conquered her enemies, buried her secrets, and chosen to love the ghost of the woman who had tried to ruin him.

And as the calm breeze swept across the terrace, Marcus looked down at the child who wasn't his, holding the wife who didn't remember her own sins, knowing that the greatest power in the world wasn't revenge...

It was choosing which truths deserved to live, and which lies were worth dying for.
