Chapter 5 - THE PHANTOM GAME

For seventy-two hours, the media storm raged outside the hospital gates.

Headlines screamed across every news channel and social media platform: "BILLIONAIRE ASSAULT: ISABELLA ROSSI CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER!" "VANCE HEIR IN CRITICAL CONDITION AFTER HOSPITAL ATTACK!" "INSIDER BETRAYAL: JULIAN VANCE ARRESTED IN PRIVATE SANATORIUM RAID!"

The public saw a dramatic tale of corporate greed, socialite jealousy, and a high-society family torn apart by violence. But inside the penthouse suite of Thorne Tower, the real war was being fought in complete silence.

Marcus Thorne sat behind his mahogany desk on the 60th floor, overlooking the rain-soaked skyline of the city.

On his desk lay three distinct items:

A small, blue velvet box containing Khloe’s wedding ring.

The confidential forensic report on the $500,000 bank wire to Isabella Rossi.

A sealed DNA paternity test report from the hospital NICU.

Marcus hadn't slept in three days. His face was gaunt, his eyes sunken and shadowed.

The door to his office clicked open. Gideon, his chief of security, walked in, placing a black encrypted flash drive on the desk.

"We finished the deep digital forensic sweep of Mrs. Thorne’s private accounts, boss," Gideon said quietly.

Marcus didn't look up from the paternity test envelope, which remained unopened. "And?"

"The bank transfer to Isabella Rossi... it wasn't hacked," Gideon revealed, his voice heavy. "The digital signature was authorized using Khloe’s primary biometrics—her thumbprint and facial recognition—from her personal laptop six months ago. The IP address matches your private beach house in the Hamptons."

Marcus closed his eyes tightly. The pain in his chest was a dull, thumping agony.

All those months when Isabella had been showing up at charity events, making subtle comments, sliding her hand onto his arm... he had assumed Isabella was just an unhinged, obsessed woman trying to tear his marriage apart.

He had spent months feeling guilty, believing that his proximity to the Rossi family had brought danger to his pregnant wife.

In reality, Khloe had staged the entire foundation. She had invited the snake into their garden.

Why?

Why would a woman who held his heart, who was carrying his son, plot to ruin him?

"There's something else, sir," Gideon added cautiously. "We swept Mrs. Thorne’s private safe at the beach house. We found a hidden secondary phone. It was encrypted with military-grade software, but our tech guys cracked it an hour ago."

Marcus opened his eyes. "What was on it?"

Gideon slid his tablet across the desk, playing an audio file recorded four months prior.

A woman’s voice filled the office. It was Khloe. But her tone wasn't the gentle, loving voice Marcus knew. It was cold, sharp, and calculated.

"He thinks he controls everything," Khloe’s recorded voice said to an unknown caller. "He thinks because he’s Marcus Thorne, I’m just going to sit quietly and be the sweet corporate wife. He doesn't know I found out about the offshore restructuring. He’s planning to drain my father's foundation after the baby is born. I’m not letting him take my family's legacy, James. I’m going to ruin him before he ruins me."

Marcus stared at the speaker as the recording ended.

The mystery caller—'James'—was James Vance, Khloe’s late father, who had passed away two years ago. This recording was a memo Khloe had made to herself, talking about her deceased father as if he were still alive.

"Sir," Gideon spoke softly. "Our medical consultant reviewed Mrs. Thorne's old records from before you two met. Four years ago, after her father died in that plane crash... Khloe was diagnosed with a rare, stress-induced dissociative disorder. Under extreme trauma or perceived threat, her mind creates elaborate defensive delusions. She begins to view the people closest to her as enemies who are trying to destroy her."

Marcus sat completely still.

The pieces of the chaotic puzzle began to fall into place with terrifying precision.

Khloe hadn't been acting out of pure malice. She had suffered a massive psychological break months ago, triggered by the stress of her high-risk pregnancy and corporate pressures. In her paranoid, delusional state, her mind had convinced her that Marcus was trying to steal her father's empire.

So, she hired Isabella to build a fake infidelity case against him.

Then, Julian Vance—her power-hungry half-brother—discovered her plan. Julian didn't stop her. Instead, he twisted her paranoid delusion for his own gain. He manipulated Isabella, paid her millions, and turned Khloe's desperate, paranoid scheme into a violent execution.

Khloe wasn't just a victim. She was the architect who had accidentally built her own execution chamber.

And now, she was sitting in a hospital room, her memory completely wiped clean by the trauma, totally unaware of the war she had started.

Marcus slowly reached out and picked up the white envelope on his desk—the DNA paternity test.

His hands shook as he tore open the seal and pulled out the paper.

His eyes scanned down the page, past the complex genetic markers, straight to the bold conclusion at the bottom of the page:

PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 0.00% RESULT: MARCUS THORNE IS EXCLUDED AS THE BIOLOGICAL FATHER.

Marcus dropped the paper. The world around him went completely black.

The breath was pulled straight out of his lungs.

The child fighting for his life in the NICU... the baby he had wept for, the baby he had sworn to protect at all costs... was not his.
