Chapter 2 - THE VIPER IN THE SHADOWS

The steady, rhythmic sound of a ventilator was the only proof that Khloe Thorne was still among the living.
Six hours had passed since the doors of Operating Room 3 had slammed shut. Outside, the sun was just beginning to peek over the city skyline, casting a pale, cold amber light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Intensive Care Unit.
Marcus sat in a rigid chair beside the bed, still dressed in his blood-stained tuxedo jacket. His tie was undone, dangling loosely around his collar. His eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by dark circles of exhaustion and guilt. He hadn't moved in hours. His eyes were locked on Khloe’s pale, motionless face.
She was alive—barely.
The surgeons had managed to restart her heart after four agonizing minutes of CPR. They had performed an emergency C-section to save the baby. The infant, a tiny boy weighing less than four pounds, was currently fighting for his life in an incubator in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit three floors down. He was hooked up to a dozens of tubes, his lungs too underdeveloped to breathe on his own.
Khloe herself was in an medically induced coma. The trauma from the physical assault, combined with severe internal bleeding, had pushed her body into total organ failure.
The door to the ICU suite slid open quietly. Arthur Vance walked in, carrying two folders. The age in his face had deepened overnight by ten years.
"How is he?" Marcus asked, his voice raw and gravelly. He didn't look up from Khloe’s hand, which he was holding tightly in his own.
"The baby is stable, but critical," Arthur said, stopping at the foot of the bed. "The next forty-eight hours will decide everything. If his lungs hold out, he’ll survive. But Khloe..." Arthur paused, his jaw tightening. "...Khloe’s brain went without oxygen for nearly three minutes. We won't know the extent of the damage until we bring her out of the coma."
Marcus pulled Khloe’s hand to his lips, resting his forehead against her cold skin. "I did this to her," he whispered, a crack breaking his usually stoic voice. "I let Isabella get close to us. I thought I was managing her... I thought I had everything under control."
"You were an idiot, Marcus," Arthur said bluntly, showing no sympathy for the billionaire before him. "You let a snake slither into your home because her father owned twenty percent of your logistics division. You prioritized business politics over your wife's safety. And now my niece is hovering between life and death."
Marcus didn't argue. He knew Arthur was right. He deserved every ounce of hatred the doctor threw at him.
Suddenly, Marcus’s phone vibrated violently on the bedside table. It was his personal line—a number only five people in the world possessed.
He picked it up, expecting his head of security. Instead, the screen displayed an encrypted caller ID.
Marcus pressed the phone to his ear. "Speak."
"Mr. Thorne," a smooth, cultured voice spoke through the speaker. It was heavily modulated, completely obscuring the caller's true tone. "I trust you’re enjoying the hospital amenities?"
Marcus’s posture straightened instantly, his eyes narrowing into slits. "Who is this?"
"A friend. Or perhaps an enemy—depending on how quickly you realize you've been playing the wrong game," the voice purred. "You think Isabella Rossi acted out of jealousy, don't you? You think she’s just a spoiled, psychotic socialite obsessed with taking your name?"
"If you have something to say, say it," Marcus growled, standing up from the chair and walking toward the window, keeping his voice down so as not to disturb the monitors.
"Check your email, Marcus. I just sent you a small gift. A token of truth. Isabella was the hammer, yes... but she wasn't the hand wielding it."
The line went dead.
A second later, Marcus’s phone chimed with a notification. An encrypted PDF file had arrived in his inbox. He opened it using his high-level security key.
As the file rendered on his screen, Marcus’s breath caught in his throat.
It was a financial ledger detailing a series of offshore bank transactions originating from the Cayman Islands. Over the past three months, over forty million dollars had been funneled into a private account registered under Isabella Rossi's name.
But it wasn't the money that made Marcus’s blood run cold. It was the sender.
The shell company that had transferred the millions to Isabella was a subsidiary of Vance Global Logistics—the multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical and real estate conglomerate owned entirely by Khloe’s family.
And the sole signee on that offshore account was none other than Julian Vance—Khloe’s half-brother.
Marcus stared at the screen, his mind racing.
Julian Vance was Khloe’s elder half-brother from her father’s first marriage. He was a quiet, unassuming executive who had always played the role of the loyal family member, content with managing the real estate division while Khloe was groomed to inherit the ultimate controlling stake in the Vance estate.
Julian had always been polite to Khloe. He had bought her baby gifts. He had attended her baby shower last month, smiling warmly, raising a toast to his future nephew.
It was all a lie.
Julian hadn't just known about Isabella’s hatred for Khloe—he had funded it. He had fed Isabella’s obsession, promising her that if she got rid of Khloe and her unborn heir, he would use his power to push Marcus into her arms, while Julian took sole control of the Vance empire.
Isabella was a pawn. A unstable, violent tool used to clean Julian's hands.
Marcus turned around slowly, looking at Arthur Vance. "Arthur... did Julian know Khloe was coming to the hospital suite last night?"
Arthur looked surprised by the question. "Julian? Of course. He was the one who arranged the private VIP wing for her. He said she needed a quiet space away from the photographers at the gala. Why?"
Marcus’s jaw set into a terrifyingly rigid line. The grief in his eyes was instantly replaced by a blinding, apocalyptic rage.
"Because your nephew didn't just want my wife humiliated," Marcus said, his voice deadly low as he turned the phone screen toward Arthur. "He wanted her and her baby dead."
Arthur leaned in, looking at the financial documents. His face turned pale as chalk. "This... this is impossible. Julian loves Khloe! They grew up together!"
"He loves fifty billion dollars of inheritance more," Marcus spat.
Before Arthur could process the shocking revelation, the ICU door swung open again.
Two detectives in plain clothes stepped into the room, followed by the Chief of Police himself, Raymond Vance (no relation to Khloe's family).
"Mr. Thorne," Chief Raymond said gravely. "We have a situation down at the central precinct."
"What situation?" Marcus asked sharply. "Isabella Rossi is in a cell, where she belongs."
"That’s the problem, sir," the Chief replied, looking visibly uncomfortable. "Thirty minutes ago, Miss Rossi’s legal team presented a signed court order from a High Court judge. They posted a twenty-million-dollar cash bail."
Marcus’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Bail? She committed attempted murder on camera! I explicitly told you—"
"They didn't just post bail, Mr. Thorne," the Chief interrupted nervously. "They presented medical documents claiming Miss Rossi suffers from severe psychotic episodes induced by a neurological condition. She was immediately transferred out of police custody and moved to a private psychiatric clinic."
"Which clinic?" Marcus demanded, taking a step toward the Chief, his fists clenching.
" setup by her family's trust," the Chief said. "The St. Jude Sanatorium."
Arthur gasped. "St. Jude? That facility is owned entirely by a subsidiary of Vance Global! Julian controls that hospital!"
The realization hit the room like a thunderbolt.
Julian wasn't just shielding Isabella from prison—he was keeping her close to make sure she didn't open her mouth and expose him to the police. He was putting his primary weapon into a cage where only he had the key.
"They're going to silence her," Marcus realized aloud. "If Isabella talks, Julian goes down for attempted murder and treason. He’s going to make sure she dies of an 'accidental overdose' in that psychiatric ward before she can testify!"
Suddenly, the heart rate monitor behind them began to beep erratically.
Beep... Beep... Beep-beep-beep-beep!
"Doctor!" a nurse rushed in. "The patient's intracranial pressure is spiking rapidly!"
Arthur rushed to Khloe’s side, checking her pupils with a penlight. "She’s having a seizure! Get 10mg of Diazepam, now!"
Khloe’s body began to spasm violently on the bed. Her hands clawed weakly at the bedsheets, her monitor screaming as her blood pressure hit dangerous levels.
Marcus watched in utter horror as the woman he loved fought for her life, caught in a web of greed, envy, and cold-blooded murder.
He didn't care about business anymore. He didn't care about public relations. He didn't care about the law.
Marcus reached into his pocket, pulled out his secondary phone, and dialed a number he hadn't called in seven years.
"Boss?" a hard, gravelly voice answered after one ring.
"Gideon," Marcus spoke into the phone, his voice dripping with pure ice. "Assemble the team. Bring the heavy gear."
"What's the target, sir?"
May you like
Marcus turned his back on the doctors fighting to save his wife, his eyes glowing with ruthless, lethal intent.
"We're raiding St. Jude Sanatorium. And if anyone gets in our way... burn it to the ground."
