Chapter 5 - Shadows at the DoorBy 8:00 PM, the Morgan Events Group offices were completely dark, save for the single desk lamp illuminating my workspace in the executive suite.

Federal agents had already executed a search warrant on Julian and Chloe’s shared apartment uptown, seizing laptops, hard drives, and financial records. The international wire transfers had been successfully intercepted and frozen by federal authorities just three hours before they cleared the Cayman escrow barrier.

As far as the law—and my family—was concerned, the threat had been neutralized.

Yet, as I packed my briefcase to leave for the evening, a persistent, uneasy feeling prickled at the back of my neck.

My phone buzzed on the desk.

An unknown number. No caller ID.

I stared at the glowing screen for a moment before swiping to answer. “Hello?”

Silence on the other end, save for the faint sound of heavy breathing and static.

“If this is Julian or Chloe, your lawyers already have my terms,” I said coldly.

A raspy, distorted voice—clearly masked by an electronic filter—spoke softly from the speaker.

“You think you won today, Claire? You think freezing a few corporate accounts stops what’s coming?”

My breath caught. “Who is this?”

“Julian was just the front man,” the voice whispered, a chilling laugh echoing through the line. “You looked in the garage, you looked in the ledger, but you forgot to check who financed the entire operation. Enjoy your weekend, Claire. Monday morning, your family’s legacy belongs to us.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

I stood frozen in the dark office, staring at the dead screen as the true nightmare began to unfold.
