Chapter 2 - The Trap Closes From WithinWhile the drama played out on the ground floor, three floors up in the executive penthouse suite, a very different conversation was taking place.

Marcus Vance—Victoria’s uncle and the Senior Vice President of Operations for the Solmere Empire—sat behind a massive mahogany desk. Across from him sat Richard Sterling, the chief legal counsel of the conglomerate, and Elena Rostova, Charlotte’s former legal guardian who had spent the last six months orchestrating the hostile takeover of Charlotte’s trust fund.

“Everything is in place,” Elena murmured, swirling a glass of amber whiskey. Her eyes sparkled with malicious satisfaction. “The forged medical documents declaring Charlotte mentally incompetent are signed. By midnight tonight, the emergency board vote will pass unanimously. The Solmere Empire will officially belong to us.”

Richard Sterling adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, a frown clouding his sharp features. “And Charlotte? Have you confirmed her location? She’s been slipping through our fingers for weeks.”

“Relax, Richard,” Marcus scoffed, waving a hand dismissively. He puffed on an expensive Cuban cigar, watching the smoke curl toward the ceiling. “She’s just a naive twenty-two-year-old girl. Without her mother’s protection, she’s nothing. My sources say she was spotted near the downtown district earlier today, looking like a homeless vagrant. She’s probably starving, freezing, and terrified.”

“Don’t underestimate her,” Elena warned, her expression hardening. “Her mother, Eleanor Vale, was a ruthless businesswoman. Genius runs in that bloodline. If Charlotte ever figures out what we did with the offshore accounts—”

Bzzzz. Bzzzz.

Marcus’s secure private desk phone began to vibrate. It was the direct line from the main lobby security desk.

Irritated by the interruption, Marcus snatched up the receiver. “This better be good. I’m in the middle of a high-level executive meeting.”

“Sir—Mr. Vance!” The head of security's voice was frantic, trembling so badly that Marcus could barely make out the words. “We have an emergency in the lobby.”

“An emergency? What kind of emergency? Did a pipe burst?”

“No, sir. It’s... it’s a disturbance involving Ms. Victoria and... and a young woman.”

Marcus rolled his eyes, rubbing his temples. “Victoria is causing a scene again? Just comp her champagne and throw the troublemaker out. You know how my niece gets when her events aren't featured in the morning papers.”

“Sir, you don’t understand,” the guard stammered, his breath coming in ragged gasps through the speaker. “The girl... she isn't leaving. And she just said something... something that made the system lock down automatically.”

Marcus froze, his cigar hovering inches from the ashtray. “What do you mean, lock down automatically?”

“She didn't just walk in, Mr. Vance. When I tried to check her digital footprint on our terminal... the master override activated. Every screen in the building just turned red. Sir... the master keycard she’s carrying isn't a fake. It’s the original Platinum Infinite Key... registered to the sole surviving heir of the founder.”

The color drained instantly from Marcus’s face. The whiskey glass slipped from Elena’s fingers, shattering against the Persian rug, the dark liquid pooling like blood across the fabric.
