Chapter 1 - The Silence Before the StormThe sprawling silence of the Solmere Hotel lobby felt heavier than lead.

Gasps caught in throats. Champagne flutes paused halfway to open mouths. For three agonizing seconds, the high-society elite of the city—people who traded in multi-million dollar real estate, political favors, and ruthless gossip—could only stare at the scene unfolding on the imported Italian marble.
Charlotte Vale slowly pushed herself up from the floor.
Her palms were raw, red streaks of friction burning against her skin. A metallic taste of iron coated her tongue from the split in her lip. But as she raised her head, there was no panic in her dark, piercing eyes. Only a cold, calculating stillness that sent an involuntary shiver down the spine of anyone close enough to catch her gaze.
Standing directly over her, chest heaving beneath an ivory silk gown embroidered with real pearls, was Victoria Vance.
Victoria was the reigning queen of local high-society charity circuits, a woman whose family fortune was entirely dependent on corporate partnerships vetted by the Solmere Board of Directors—a board currently conspiring to strip Charlotte of everything.
“Are you deaf, you pathetic little beggar?” Victoria sneered, shaking out her silk sleeves as if she had just touched something foul. She looked around the room, expecting validation, expecting the approving chuckles of her peers. “Security! What are you all standing around for? Drag this trash out into the street before she ruins the floor.”
Two burly security guards in tailored navy suits hurried forward, their faces tight with anxiety. They recognized Victoria Vance immediately; she was a platinum-tier VIP guest whose father held immense sway over hotel franchising.
“Apologies, Ms. Vance. We’ll handle her right away,” the lead guard muttered, stepping toward Charlotte and reaching out a heavy hand to grab her shoulder.
“Don’t touch me,” Charlotte said. Her voice was not loud. It wasn't a scream or a plea. It was quiet, clear, and cut straight through the ambient hum of the chandelier crystals.
The guard froze, his hand hovering inches from her tank top. Something in the absolute stillness of her posture made his professional instincts flicker with unease.
“You heard the lady,” Victoria laughed harshly, crossing her arms. “You don't belong here. Girls who look like they crawled out of a dumpster don’t walk into a seven-star establishment unless they’re here to steal or beg. Get her out of my sight. Now.”
Charlotte slowly rose to her full height. She didn't wipe the blood from her lip. She let it sit there like a badge of honor.
“Your name is Victoria Vance,” Charlotte stated, her eyes locking onto the socialite with an intensity that made Victoria step back half a pace.
“And what if it is?” Victoria snapped, trying to recover her arrogant composure. “Who do you think you are, addressing me directly?”
“I am someone,” Charlotte said, stepping forward, forcing Victoria to retreat another inch, “who is about to make sure you never step foot inside any building bearing the Solmere name again.”

A ripple of nervous laughter spread through the crowd. A girl in a torn tank top threatening one of the most powerful socialites in the city? It sounded like the delusion of a madwoman.
Little did they know, the countdown had already begun.
