Chapter 3 - THE FLASH OF RED AND BLUE

The sirens didn't just arrive; they tore through the quiet night like a physical shockwave.
Flashing crimson and azure light sliced through the shattered bathroom doorway, painting Daniel’s face in grotesque, strobe-lit shadows. For a split second, the cold, calculated predator froze, his gloved hand hovering inches from the shower curtain, caught mid-motion between murder and escape.
"Sheriff’s Office! Nobody move!" a booming voice echoed from the living room. Heavy combat boots pounded against the hardwood floor, closing the distance toward the master hallway with terrifying speed.
Daniel spun around, his face draining of all color. "Clara—" he barked, but the warning came too late.
A sharp scuffle broke out by the front entry, followed by a loud crash as someone—likely Clara—was slammed hard against the living room wall. Shouts ricocheted down the corridor: “Suspect secured! Clear the hallway!”
Daniel backed up a step into the bathroom, his chest heaving, his eyes darting frantically between the shattered doorway and the window overlooking the backyard drop. The mask of calm calculation was completely gone, replaced by the cornered panic of a rat in a trap.
"Daniel Carter! Step out of the room with your hands visible! Do it now!" a deputy yelled, his flashlight beam slicing through the doorway and pinning Daniel against the sink.
In the sudden glare, Daniel’s gaze snapped back toward our hiding spot behind the shower curtain. A dark, ugly realization twisted his features. He knew that if the police pulled us out alive, if Noah or I managed to speak, his life sentence was guaranteed.
In one swift, violent motion, Daniel lunged forward, his hand diving into the pocket of his jacket and pulling out a heavy, steel-barreled hunting knife.
"Stay back!" Daniel roared, turning the blade toward the doorway. "I swear to God, I’ll take the kid with me!"
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Noah let out a faint, terrified whimper, his small hand instinctively gripping my shirt tighter.

Not while I'm breathing, I told myself, ignoring the cold numbness spreading through my veins from the poison.
With a surge of desperate adrenaline, I kicked out with all the remaining strength in my legs, driving the heel of my sneaker straight into the back of Daniel’s knee joint.
