Chapter 4 - THE COLLAPSE

The sudden impact caught Daniel completely off guard.

His knee buckled inward with a sickening pop, and his balance shattered instantly. He let out a sharp cry of pain, his body twisting sideways as he crashed hard against the edge of the porcelain sink, the heavy hunting knife clattering out of his grip and skittering across the slick tiles.

"Clear! Suspect down in the master bath!" the deputy shouted, rushing into the room with his service weapon drawn and leveled directly at Daniel's chest.

Two more officers swarmed the small space, pinning Daniel face-down onto the floor with a heavy thud, the metallic click of handcuffs snapping shut around his wrists echoing like thunder in the confined room.

"You’re making a mistake! I’m the victim here! My wife—she’s unstable—!" Daniel screamed, thrashing against the officers as they hauled him roughly to his feet, his face pressed against the shattered doorframe. He glared back at me with eyes full of pure, unadulterated venom. "You bitch... you absolute bitch!"

"Shut your mouth and walk," the deputy snapped, shoving him hard down the hallway toward the flashing lights outside.

As Daniel was dragged past the doorway, the harsh light caught Clara pinned against the living room wall by a female officer, her face stained with mascara tears, her expensive heels kicked off to the side. She wouldn't even look up as Daniel cursed her name into the night air.

Inside the bathroom, the chaos faded into a surreal, muffled hum.

"Ma'am? Can you hear me?"

A paramedic was kneeling beside us now, flashing a bright penlight into Noah’s eyes. The sterile smell of medical antiseptic replaced the lingering scent of garlic and green sauce.

"My... my son," I managed to choke out, my throat feeling as though it were lined with sandpaper. The phone had slipped from my numb fingers, clattering onto the floor where the 911 operator’s voice still faintly called out: “Medical units are on scene. Help has arrived.”

"They've got him, Mom. We're safe," I whispered to Noah, pulling him into my arms as the paramedics lifted us both onto stretchers, carrying us out into the cool, life-saving air of the front porch.
