Chapter 6 - THE HIDDEN SAFE

The television screen cut from the news anchor to live footage outside a sleek downtown brick building, where police tape fluttered in the morning breeze.
Detectives in blue windbreakers were carrying out cardboard boxes and heavy plastic evidence bags.
"According to lead investigators," the reporter continued, his voice dramatic, "the wall safe behind Daniel Carter’s executive desk did not just contain offshore bank accounts and fake passports for two. It also contained a detailed ledger dating back over three years, documenting a series of suspicious, large cash withdrawals—and a second beneficiary."
My breath caught in my throat.
Sarah stood up, walking closer to the television screen, her jaw slack. "Second beneficiary? I thought Clara said they were running away together to South America using his personal savings."
"That’s what Clara thought," I whispered, a cold chill washing over me as the reporter dropped a bombshell that shattered everything I thought I knew.
"Police have just confirmed that the insurance policy taking effect six months ago wasn't just signed by Daniel Carter," the reporter stated, holding up a blown-up photograph of a document to the camera lens. "The primary signature on the notarized witness line... belongs to Rachel Carter’s own younger brother, Mark."
The room seemed to tilt sideways.
Mark?
My brother Mark, who lived three states away, who had called us just last week to borrow five thousand dollars for his struggling business? Mark, who had visited us for Thanksgiving and laughed at Daniel’s bad dad jokes across the very same dining room table?
"No," I breathed, shaking my head violently. "No, that’s impossible. Mark doesn't even like Daniel. They could barely stand in the same room together for more than an hour!"
"That’s what Daniel wanted everyone to believe," a new voice spoke from the doorway.
We both turned. Standing in the entrance of the hospital room was Detective Miller, the lead investigator on our case, holding a thick manila folder under his arm. His face was grim, carrying the heavy exhaustion of a man who had been up for forty-eight hours straight.
"Mrs. Carter," Detective Miller said gently, stepping inside and closing the door behind him. "I’m afraid your husband’s web of deception went a lot deeper than an extramarital affair with a coworker."

He walked over and placed a printed bank statement on the rolling tray beside my bed.
"Your brother Mark didn't borrow five thousand dollars last week, Mrs. Carter," Detective Miller said quietly. "He received a wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars from an offshore shell corporation owned entirely by Daniel Carter. And the memo line on that transfer read: 'Phase one completion.'"
