Chapter 7 - THE FAMILY BETRAYAL

The silence in the hospital room was absolute, broken only by the steady, mechanical beep of the heart monitor.
I stared down at the bank statement, my fingers trembling as I traced the numbers with my eyes. Fifty thousand dollars. Clean, digital proof that my own flesh and blood had sold my life—and Noah’s—to the monster I had slept beside for six years.
"Mark..." I whispered, the name tasting like ash in my mouth. "Why? Why would he do this?"
Detective Miller flipped open his manila folder, revealing a transcript of text messages intercepted between Daniel’s burner phone and a private number registered under an LLC in Nevada.
"Debt," Detective Miller explained bluntly. "Your brother accumulated massive gambling losses over the past two years through underground sports betting syndicates. Loan sharks were threatening to take his home and business. Daniel approached him with a proposition: help orchestrate an 'accidental' tragedy that would look like food poisoning, split the two-million-dollar life insurance payout once probate cleared, and wipe the slate clean."
Sarah covered her mouth with both hands, tears spilling freely down her cheeks. "I talked to him on the phone yesterday. He asked how Noah was doing. He sounded... so normal. How could someone be that cold?"
"Greed makes monsters out of ordinary people, Ms. Vance," Detective Miller replied softly. He looked back down at me. "We already have a warrant out for Mark’s arrest in Chicago. But there’s something else you need to know, Mrs. Carter. Something that came up in Daniel’s interrogation about twenty minutes ago."
My stomach clenched into a tight, agonizing knot. "What is it?"
"Daniel didn't just plan to poison you and your son," Detective Miller said, his eyes locking onto mine with grim seriousness. "He had a backup plan in case the police arrived before the poison took full effect. And based on what we found in Mark’s recent travel logs... your brother wasn't just sitting in Chicago waiting for a wire transfer."
Before the detective could finish his sentence, the hospital room door swung wide open.

A nurse rushed in, breathless and wide-eyed, pointing frantically at the corridor outside.
"Detective! You need to get out to the nurse's station right now! A man just checked in using a visitor pass under an alias, and security footage shows he just bypassed the elevator bank—he’s heading straight for this hallway!"
