Chapter 5 - THE HOSPITAL ROOM TRUTH

The sterile white walls of the county hospital room hummed with the steady, rhythmic beep of a cardiac monitor.
Three days had passed since the night on the bathroom floor. Three days of intravenous fluids, activated charcoal treatments, and toxicological panels that confirmed what I already knew: a lethal dose of organophosphate pesticide had been expertly mixed into our dinner, while Daniel’s plate had remained entirely untouched.
Noah was sleeping soundly in the bed beside mine, color slowly returning to his cheeks, his breathing steady and deep.
My sister, Sarah, sat in the plastic chair next to my bed, her eyes red-rimmed from crying, turning a local newspaper over in her hands. The headline blazed across the front page in bold, black letters:
LOCAL TEACHER ARRESTED IN PREMEDITATED POISONING PLOT; SHOCKING DETAILS EMERGE ABOUT SECRET LIFE.
"The arraignment is in two hours," Sarah said softly, not looking up from the paper. "His defense lawyer tried to claim it was an accidental food contamination from bad chicken at the local market. But Clara broke under interrogation twelve hours ago. She gave the police everything—the text messages, the bank accounts he transferred overseas, the life insurance policy he took out on you six months ago worth two million dollars."
I stared up at the acoustic ceiling tiles, feeling a profound, heavy numbness settle deep into my bones. The poison was gone from my blood, but the memory of his whisper—“It’s soon going to be over”—echoed like a ghost in my mind.
"He thought he was smarter than everyone else," I said, my voice hoarse. "He calculated every single detail except one: he forgot that a mother will crawl through glass before she lets anyone touch her child."
"He’s facing attempted capital murder and conspiracy charges," Sarah continued, placing her hand gently over mine. "The DA said with Clara’s testimony and the 911 audio recording, he’ll never see the outside of a maximum-security prison."
Just as Sarah finished speaking, the wall-mounted television in the corner of the hospital room flickered, switching automatically to a live broadcast from the county courthouse steps.
A news anchor in a sharp suit appeared on screen, reporting live from the scene.

"Breaking developments in the Carter poisoning case," the anchor announced urgently. "Police executing a search warrant at Daniel Carter’s downtown office this morning have just uncovered a second set of financial records. And what investigators found inside a hidden wall safe has left them questioning whether Daniel Carter acted alone..."
I sat up straight in bed, my heart skipping a beat as I stared at the screen.
